Tamil Nadu, known for clear verdicts with landslide victories, the outcome was a hung assembly with the DMK falling short of an absolute majority by about 15 seats in a House of 234.
Conforming to a trend that started in 1989, the incumbent AIADMK government was voted out, raising the possibility of a coalition in the state for the first time. But it appears the DMK’s allies are keen on staying out of the government and providing it only outside support. There has been no word from the Congress, a crucial ally with about 20 seats, on the issue.
DMK President M Karunanidhi has been elected to the state assembly for a record eleventh time. Karunanidhi recorded his hat-trick win from Chepuak constituency, when he defeated Dawood Miakhan of the splinter group of Indian Union Muslim league by a margin of 8,522 votes.
