Reservation in Educational Institutions (Misc.)

You guys must have heard the news about the reservations in premier institutions. The current debate about 27% OBC reservation and sufficient access to educational institutions poses various questions to the stakeholders.
Post liberalization, institutions of higher education are emerging as global competitors especially in the area of professional education. At the same time, larger numbers of Indian achievers and achievements have contributed to recognition of India as a knowledge hub, and the Indian economy as a predominantly knowledge-based economy.
However, it is sad to note that even as institutions like IIT, IIM and NIT gain global recognition and respect, our politicians have been focused on how to meddle with their administration. From Murli Manohar Joshi of the BJP to Arjun Singh of the Congress, they have found the ways to needle these institutions, interfere with their management and attempt to bring about a dilution in their high standards, instead of encouraging them to go global while maintaining high standards of performance.

Update 1:
The anti-reservations protests are spreading accross the country. Police in Mumbai lathicharged medical students and New Delhi Medical Students are on Hunger Strike.

“The television footage of merciless lathicharge, got back the memories of the british raj.The only difference is that the lathis were in the hands of the like colored citizens of our democratic country” –Prachi
“The lathicharge at a peaceful protest…wat does it remind you of? Remember Jalliawala Bagh?” — valestia

“youth has awaken and they fear just that” –Voice06

“India is being regarded as the world’s intellectual capital. Increasing reservations will not only hamper merit, it will also make other countries suspect Indian talent. The entire quota system should be abolished.” –Rela
Update 2:
The whole issue of reservations has created an uproar throughout the student community in India. Now its even sweeping through various other communties as Lawyers, IT professionals joining in too. The Govt. is planning on increasing the seats to offset the the reducation caused by the quota. IIMA, Infosys including Narayana Murthy is against this hike in the number of seats. An insightful question was raised by some one in our discussion. Hike in seats, should automatically imply a proper hike in infrastructure and other facilities? This has not been promised? Even if hike comes, does this really help? or does this dilute the quality of education? Use comments sections and start a meaningful discussion.
Update 3:
On Friday evening, anti-reservation protestors at JNU were taking out a peaceful candlelight march along with students from IIT Delhi. However, the pro-reservation JNU students, who mostly belong to or sympathise with the Left, didn’t apporove. They tried to stop the IIT students from entering the campus and followed by complete chaos and mayhem. One girl was severely injured in the clash.

Update 4:
Govt says it loud, clear: OBC quota from June ‘07
The quota debate is gathering storm and the doctors have entered the ninth day of hunger strike but the Government does not seem to be relenting. Government today announced that 27% reservations for OBC’s will be implemented from June 2007. The Centre now has a new target. Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Meira Kumar has said that the private sector will be given two years to introduce reservations voluntarily. Kumar has said that if the private sector does not do the same within the set time limit, then the Government will be forced to bring in a law to that effect.

Update 5:

The Government wouldnt want to roll back on the decision they made. Now the PM says the reservations are done deal. But the protests against reservations are stepping up as the people from different sectors in the country are joining the cause. Now the agitations intensified in states like MP, Gujarat and around the country. Now the AIIMS Faculty Association has decided to go on mass casual leave on Thursday to support the anti-quota agitation by medicos.”We express our deep feelings for the medicos and appeal to the government to come out with some solution keeping in mind the students’ demand. Some of our traders also shut their markets in the first half,” said Praveen Khandelwal, secretary general of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).

Just got to see how we “Yuva” will face him and other corrupt politicians continously denigrating and abusing the system. Ofcourse, I’m curious to see who will resemble Siddharth and Amir Khan and “END” this era of dirty politics. Desperate situations call for desperate measure. 2. Put an end to all reservations and stop driving people like me from India. I graduated from IIT in 1997 and did not want to leave India, unfortunately I did not see enough opportunities in the Govt. sector. I am in Nuclear Materials and there are no jobs in the private sector in India. The US Govt. is good enough to offer me a job. I am patriotic to India and would like to contribute towards her development. I see underqualified people working for Govt. and it hurts the reputation of the whole country.

  4. Wat can I say. From Mandal Singh to Arjun Singh, everyone wants to spoil the country for their personal political profits. May be its a dream in next 1000 years, sometime, India can become a reservation free country. Reservation everywhere, for education, job, ration cards, buses, u name it. Aren’t there real ways to tackle backwardness. Provide the BC students with books & motivation, don’t pay them to study, they goof with the govt money, and at the end they have their jobs reserved, even though they didn’t pass.

Can anyone see how this is helping them to study. Country is pampering them. Provide means of study based on financial status, not on caste status. Not even a single politician wants to talk about it. India is great, Indians r not.

  5. Reservation based on Caste is first in the world, and India keeps it going for last 50 years and will keep it perrenial . Reservation is a public torture for a poor Forward caste guy. So its ok that forward caste poor guy can’t study, but its not ok if a backward caste guy can’t study. How foolish it can be. Can we open our eyes, spread our ideas on internet, and popularize the motives of these corrupt politicians. There are already enough of these lame students, in RECs, who study nothing, because Govt says, since u r backward, u just go to college, but dont need to study, we got ur job reserved too. India wake-up…Rang De Basanthi is a movie, lets show something practical.

Already there is no strict policy to make sure that the quota is being availed by the really deprived classes and is not being misused by creamy layer.

All the admissions to professional colleges and jobs should be based only on MERITOCRACY.

In no way should this reservation system be allowed to hinder the basic rights of deserving minds of so called high class people.

There is no end to this reservation on basis of castism.
Already the govt. has plans to introduce quota in “Private” sector. Which the private sector has opposed unanimously.

The quality of Human Resource must not be compromised as it will have a drastic impact on the future of the nation

Still further if u go the politicians will give 100% reservations to all the backward castes in what ever field u think. 16. Hi Friends,
Every one of us should agree that ” There were days when the back ward caste people were used to be treated very badly “.
Even to this day, after 50 years.. there are many areas where the situation is the same. They are struggling in POVERTY and ILLETRACY. Education can only change their situation. So Reservation is ofcourse needed for these people in order to encourage them towards this path. Untill here its FINE. The Career path of an individual gets decided by his efforts in his Intermediate / plus1&2 stage. From this stage onwards the further growth of any citizen should depend only their HARDWORK/PERSEVERENCE AND GOALS.
The reservation after this stage doesn’t make any sense at all.
Why should some one get qualification of taking up prefessional courses like engineering/Medicine/MBA by using their CASTE. If they really aim at, then use their MERIT not any thing else ( neither MONEY nor CASTE ) . I have many backward caste friends who 100% agree with this view of mine. But yeah, our COUNTRY is far behind the PERFECTION levels. We should take up the responsibility on our shoulders. LET US DO IT.

  17. This issue has been going on since I was 13 years old. Now I am 30 and still the issue is hot and never solved. I don’t see it getting resolved even when I reach to 60. Damn our politicians. When the constitution was written, the situation was different during those days. Heard that backward people were suppressed in all possibilities. But the situation changed, they are ruling us in all possibilities. Then why still the RESERVATION? Instead of the percentage getting reduced it has been constatly increasing? That is so surprising. The situation now is that the talented guys are suppressed. We lose them to other countries and our country is still being suppressed by these so called politicians. The growth of industries/hospitals are being suppressed because of the quality of the engineers/doctors that these institutions are producing due to reservations. Now you see how many are being suppressed????

There are so many Forward caste people who cannot afford for their further education. Who is looking after them?? Do you see any reservation for these guys? Will they not get frustrated when his seat is given to some other guy who can afford it? or less talented than him?

I once again say Politicians also should be educated/qualified people who need to pass through entrance tests, undergo interviews and then get a position in assembly/parliament. Then they will know the pain that we go through to get one degree certificate. No more illiterate/racists as politicians……. We want highly educated and qualified guys as our rulers. No RESERVATIONS for politicians also. No RESERVED SEATS for them. No women quota. (I being woman). I would like to see women compete with guys equally not with reservations.

  18. Hi the govt says reservations are for the upliftment of the so called OBC people, I appplozize for any one who hurts with this but I have to say this, These so called reservations are there for SC and ST from last 55 years or so, but how many have used them? very few and these are the people who are using them right from 55years not giving any chance to the other fellow SC and ST. So, where is the justification? who is suppressing who? i wont see any different future for this one these are definetly used by the creamy layer and no good is been done for the really deserved people although i think this is not a right idea for helping them?
so, I think the very idea of reservations wont solve the problems and help the deserved. Every one knows the govt or Mr. mindless singh is doing this for votes or to mobilise all the OBC MPs towards him to become PM, but a person wihtout a mind cant be PM of India. But there is one suggestion from me to this singh as these reservation poilicy is no good for anybody except creamy layer people, now it is time for our professionals and lawmakers to sit and workout a policy to help the deserved who is bereaved of the oppurtunity to study higher education (no matter he is from OC, FW, OBC, SC, ST anyone) without effecting MERIT which should lead the country. then I analyse this SHIT GOVT can hope of getting votes from all quarters of the society. The mindless singh can then hope to sit in the parliament as he dont want to leave it untill he dies.

  19. Yeah reservation is good only until a certain stage… High School Level so that people get a sense of what education is for. After that merit should count. Govt. is just into reservation for their personal motives. None of them is intrested in the development of the country. Just want their party to get the majority so that they can get what they want.

This stuff is crazy. If this reservation comes in the progress of a hard working NON RESERVATION Candidate…trust me he will try to get away from there and find a better place to live in.

  22. Dear readers,
I hope my comments may pacify some of you but it is upto us people to decide wether reservations are to be opted or not. I donot blame anybody for this situation as Dr BR Ambedaker along with 12 more people at the time of drafting constitution has written that reservations should be on scene for 10 years starting from 1950. But unfourtunately our dishonest, courropted, so called Poly/tecians(politicians) have been trying to explore ways which will attract votes and fetch them power.
Then what is the best or correct method for this
    1. Educate people whom these politicians are extracting votes so that what ever false promise they make at present should be an oppurtunity for citizens to reject these bloody people.
2.People should understand themselves about the bad impact of reservations which is not possible
3.Just leave the country if u belong to the other category. Forget to change the system becose it will change you as happend earlier and happens in future.
All the best at various consulates.

  29. I think we should have job reservations in all the fields. I completely
support the PM and all the politicians for promoting this. Let’s start
the reservation with our cricket team. We should have 10 percent
reservation for muslims. 30 percent for OBC, SC/ST like that. Cricket
rules should be modified accordingly. The boundary circle should be
reduced for an SC/ST player. The four hit by an OBC player should be
considered as a six and a six hit by a OBC player should be counted as 8
runs. An OBC player scoring 60 runs should be declared as a century.

We should influence ICC and make rules so that the pace bowlers like
Shoaib Akhtar should not bowl fast balls to our OBC player. Bowlers
should bowl maximum speed of 80 kilometer per hour to an OBC player. Any
delivery above this speed should be made illegal.

Also we should have reservation in Olympics. In the 100 meters race, an
OBC player should be given a gold medal if he runs 80 meters.

There can be reservation in Government jobs also. Let’s recruit SC/ST
and OBC pilots for aircrafts which are carrying the ministers and
politicians (that can really help the country.. )

Ensure that only SC/ST and OBC doctors do the operations for the
ministers and other politicians. (Another way of saving the country..)

Let’s be creative and think of ways and means to guide INDIA forward…
Let’s show the world that INDIA is a GREAT country. Let’s be proud of
    being an INDIAN..

  30. What to say when everyone know the real intention of this is to garner support for you/your party.

    When will this change..???
The problem is not with politicians it is with democracy.
Why blame politicians that they are doing this for power and money. What will all the people who have writen so much against politicans do when they were given chance.I will win the contest if atleast more than one person out of hundred does against what the politicans are doing when given a chance.

When you make a dog sit on a throne does that stop wagging its tail. Just as it does not get the escence of its position an inelgible person given an oppurtunity does the same.

Then the million dollar question .. how to solve the problem… The problem can be solved at best by changing the way
    we elect the people…

    Have an eligible vote counted

Allow every person to cast their vote but value it differently

A vote casted by a post graduate count it as 10 points

The one casted by a graduate count as 5 points.
In the same way count the vote of a person without education as one point.

Then all the people will argue there are people who are not educated but are more politically educated the only solution for that is

If you want to make your vote counted you alone can make it counted. Struggle for your voice be heard, struggle for your recognition

If we can truly do this people like me need not write these kind of posts from a PC in abroad but rather from a premier institution of Government of India.

One last suggestion blaming others our problem is no solution…

The reason I am saying it as our problem is because

We have not made our voices heard

I am equally or more than responsible than every body who are/aren’t reading this post as I do feel that I had temporarily escaped the problem for time being instead of implementing a solution for it which everyone knows.

There can be reservation in Government jobs also. Let’s recruit SC/ST and
OBC pilots for aircrafts which are carrying the ministers and politicians
(that can really help the country.. )

Ensure that only SC/ST and OBC doctors do the operations for the ministers
and other politicians. (Another way of saving the country..)

Let’s be creative and think of ways and means to guide INDIA forward…
Let’s show the world that INDIA is a GREAT country. Let’s be proud of being
    an INDIAN..

  46. I do agree that it is simply unfair to differentiate people simply based on the birth. It is ‘not’ one’s fault that he/she is born in a backword family. Howerver, I strongly believe that reservations should not be necessary. There are many ways to bring the equality and reservation is just not one of them. Infact, this is a very definite way of discriminating people by turning one sect of people angry and revengeful against another. There are backword or under developed sections in many countries including US, but most of them are not doing what India does for ‘equality’.

I studied engineering in AP and at that time there were less than 6K seats in all colleges combined. We had about 50% regular reservations (ST/SC/BC/Sports etc) and 30% for women in all categories including ‘open’. So it leaves only 35% in open category. And remember, people from reserved categories can also compete under ‘open’ and which probably leaves around 30% room for students with no reservation. When I saw the class roster after entering the college, there were fellows who barely qualified the entrace examination. Also, please note that qualifying marks for SC/ST is much less compared to others. It is also interesting to note to many parents of these students were well educated and working in ‘good’ govt jobs and some are even in civil services (IPS etc). I felt shocked when some say they are missing on ‘full’ scholorship (though they get ‘full’ reservation) because their fathers work for govt. Can you belive, they even have special quota in library where as, we hardly find any good books that we are allowed to checkout. So, most of us ended up buying them. Inspite of all these facilities i.e., free food, hostel, books, tution etc., many of them find it difficult to even ‘pass’ the exams. However, they most definitely find a govt job as soon as they complete the degree (no matter how long that takes). In addition, most of these people have so much insecurity in them, even if someone utters ’single’ word aginst them (most of these fights do not originate becase of caste), there will be a big fight or even a police complain under ’special’ sections for which it gets difficult to get a bail even.

I belive the true way of fighting the birth based inequality is providing an equal opportuny for healthy comptetition. One should only worry about his/her skills and how they fit in the real world and not about where they took birth. Since true competition starts only after primary eduction, the govt should provide free and ‘good’ primary education ‘common’ to everyone. This should also include food, books and accomodation for those who cannot afford on their own. Also, those who get qualified for advanced education should not be denied the opportunity based on financial status and govt should provide assistance to the needed. When coming to finding work/jobs, there should not be any need for reservation - actually, if everything is implented properly, it may even be unfair to have any reservation since everyone had an equal opportunity to succeed till that point.

To end, I do not totally discourage the idea of initiating the reservations after our freedom from the British. At that time, people from some castes were really treated badly and reservation was a good way to force them being accepted into the main stream. I admire people like Ambedkar who, inspite of the background and situations around him during that period, were able to study and make a mark in the country’s history. Which is truly inspiring as it might have been extremely difficult for them to reach where they were inspite of being gifted with immense talent. And if I remember correctly, when he proposed reservations, it was for this purpose only and only for a limited period. Later, our ‘great’ politicians kept on extending it and also included tens (or hunderds) of new castes into this reservation system to better their chances of winning the elections.

I know this is not as easy as it sounds (as any change is..), but if our political leaders stop thinking about votes and personal/party gains for a second and think about the country and real problems, it is definitely possible to achieve what our country relaly needs!!

  47. given a luxury man will become addicted to it and time will come when he cannot survive with it.
Reservations are the same ur making people get addicted to it. When u introduce a bill it should have a clear picture of wat is it targeted for how many will benefit and wat is the time frame and when do u think it cud b scraped off. This bill clearly doesn’t seem to have a plan if we could not achieve so called “equality ” in last 50 yrs, why go for the same old practise?I am not against helping those people who does’t have access to education
neither am i for the concept of denying right of some people to get access to premier instituions jus bcoz they were born in Uppercastes. It is a project without a deadline, a company without a mission and it wud never achieve the target.all it wud do is to gain some votes from those poeple who are made to believe that they wud bcome super men in near future .

Remember what happened recently in France, where the government had to strike out an absurd law regarding employment of young workers….I wonder if something like that is possible in India, where the government takes a step back…with the perseverance of youth…voicing against unreasonable reservations…

Introducing reservations in educational institutions and public/private firms is a malicious attempt to diluate the quality of education and work force respectively.

If the politicians really wanted to check the Back ward castes (who are supposed to be financially weak) they can give financial aid if they cleared IIT entrance and manged into the campus. That will be enough…. why do some need to have a reserved seat. Oh I forgot to mention I am also an OBC as per the Govt……

  55. Reservation was introduced into the Indian constituency in 1951 and it was meant to stay for 10 years. ever since our political leaders have been extending and amending the consitution in favour of their political flavor and ultimately the generations had to suffer the impact of these reservations. I do agree that reservation had a good impact the first 10 years of its introduction in giving a good opportunity and exposure to the underpriviliged and suppressed castes of the society and wiping out the untouchability. But things have to change as time goes ahead. The country we see today is not what it was 50 years back. When everything has changed, why doesnt the system change to adapt to the current needs of the country? The government/politicians have to realize( i know they are not sleeping and ignorant of whats happening around) and change the constitution. Its high time!! I still remember the anti-reservation agitation which occured in the 90’s when VP SINGH was the prime minister and he tried to give 50% or something reservation for the backward castes. I dont understand why these politicians dont want to open their eyes and ears to the hues and cries of the merit??? The cover page of India Today magazine which was published at that time had a Delhi student burning himself to express his agitation against reservation. 15 years down the line, i still cannot forget that picture even today. Every single responsible person should not forget the courage what the students at that time showed in revolting against the reservation system. Their sacrifice should not go in vain. Young India has to join hands to fight and put an end to the ever dragging system. Lets make India a better place for you and me and everyone. Everyone has the same feeling in their hearts, so lets voice it and put it into action instead of staying dormant forever. Lets be called a country of resources not reservations!!!

Any how so my point is he gave statement saying that government has an obligation to fulfill some shit towards backward class and so basically there are no other agenda or problems which this lousy governement has except for reservation policy. These politicians will do anything for votes and money, forget country they will sell their own mother. 70. I read a report from one of the CEOs of an american company about indian talent published in rediff few months back saying that though India produces so many engineers only 25% are up to the mark. Here may an exlpanation of why this is not so shocking-

As I said previously, in govt collegies in AP, out of 100 students you will find that 70 came from some or other reservation. However, when it comes to priviate engineering colleges situation is worse as there is an additional 15-20% NRI and ‘institution’ quoate which they literally sell and who ever pays most gets it. This leaves only about 10-15% to open students. Can you belive, out of every 100 students only 10 to 15 got adminssion because of what they are and not bc’s of birth or money. So don’t blame any one who doesn’t trust the talent - they have to spens so much time filtering out candidates..:-).

The only good feeling I had so far was at least our good and renouned institutions do not have such riduculous policies and talent is really recognized and which is now fading. Pretty soon, the recoginization the world had for indian talent now will go away. Bad sign!!

The social and caste discrimination is an existing evil in the country, but providing relaxation of norms and reservations is definitely not the solution to go about it.,many bereaucrats, academicians, economists and planning comm members are agreeing to it.
Arjun singh and the Manmohan singh Govt is promising a “proposed” hike in the seats to offset the the reducation caused by the quota, but isnt this obvious–Hike in seats, shud automatically imply a proper hike in infrastructure and other facilities, but this has not been “promised”.The hike may never come, but even if it does,is it of any use???

  75. For decades, we have never been allowed to enter the TEMPLE or temple of knowledge [ School]. We have been a subject of humiliation for many years. Even during school and college days, we have been treated differently. I do agree that most of the seats go vacant, but GIVE US some breathing space.
I am not sure that the govt should implement the 27 % quota for OBCs for higher education. I havent read the MANDAL’s recommendation on it. But its wise to set up a non political committee to decide on it. They should at the demographics and then set similar plans. The govt should be priority to the poor and needy. I would like you all the make a note of few things.

SC and ST candidates do belong to the poorest socio economic status.

Regarding comments on Students from AP, please look at the enngineers who are passing from institutes of China. Please try to compare the educational standards set by AP and other County/ states. There are so many biases. Theres no way you can pin point that coz of SC and ST students, they are not up to mark

Secondly, its the Institutes fault. they should set high standards. Compare a Guy from AIMMS and Other medical colleges. there is certianly a differences between them. But its not the brain alone. Your surronding and secondly your teachers that play a big role.

Last but not the least, SC and ST students are still discriminated during ORAL and Vivas.

I would like to add more. but iam running short of time.
Please read this article if before typing any more messages.

  76. Well, I read the article.. To be honest, there is nothing to contradict in the well written document. I mentioned in my first post that I do understand why the reservation system is introducted and I admire people like ambedkar who were able to succeed and become an integratal part of our coutry’s history.

The main reason for the frustration is bececause of SC/ST reservation, it is because OBC reservations. Imagine my feeling, irrespetive getting good grades and markes, I couldn’t get into colleges I liked because about 70-90% are reserved to some category or other. We know that we can’t get into govt jobs easily… but recently, we are getting over it becuase atleast we can try for private jobs. Now govt is planning introduce reservation there too…:-). Do you realize that it is all politics for attracting votes??

SC/ST reservations were always there in IIT or IIM and why do OBC’s need reservations and I have no complains about keep them as it is, buy reservation for BC’s 50 years after freedom?.

Also, if the parents of SC/ST are well educated and working in good jobs, don’t you think they had same or even better opportunity to succeed than the non-reserved candidate whose father is a poor farmer. Believe me, I have so many friends who do not get scholership or any benifits and can’t even pay school fee properly. Do you think it is justifiable?? I agree giving the first push is important, but do you need the push every time?? If the parent is an IPS officer (we had couple of them like this), do you think does the person really deserves a reservation??

Do you honestly think that reservation brings equality or solves all the problems. I do understand that it has helped people from some categories to come into main stream. But, do you know any BC’s treated that way so far? I know may of them established themeselves no less than any non-reserved candidates. I know very rich people from BC’s (espcially some categories of BC probably ‘D’) are well established financially and also enjoying good amount of reservation. I know one, whose both parents are doctors (one in govt and one does private practice) and even grand parents are very very rich, and he got entrance rank 3 times more than mine, but we both mananged to get into same class. With that rank, I will not even get the last seat in last engineering rank. Do you think, it is justifiable??

Please don’t misunderstand me.. this is just frustration talking..

  77. @ Sonia,

Its been 60 years since we got our independence.. so even now if you think there is a descrimintation agst. SC and ST, that means reservations are not serving their purspose. I do understand whats with SC/ST. But the point here is does OBC (I have seen enough OBC s who are richer than me.. and who studied in better schools.. and whos dads and moms are doing pretty good money wise just by using these reservations). The point here I am trying to make why cant the govt do something to improve the education system by not making available these reservations. Why cant they concentrate on providing better opportunities by establishing good schools and paying good to teachers .. they dont want to do that, but the easiest thing for them is to throw some reservations. I am myself from middle class forward caste, I studied in a govt school.. did all the best things I could do to get into an engg school. I worked hard and got an admission. The only reason I couldnt goto a better engg school was because of these reservations. I was placed among top 1.2% in our state level Engg entrance exam .. some one who was in top 70% got into a better school with a scholarship.. its just an example.. there are so many people like me. There should be a change how they imply reservations and how the govt shd do good to POOR PEOPLE (NOT SC/ST/OBC). A change should come in people who are Pro-Reservation, they should understand the voice of people who are meritorious and not able to get into schools beacuse of these reservations. I have seen no country in the world who implement reservations based on caste … this is fuckin crazy …

This reservation system should never be allowed in medical field for sure.

I can certainly understand that for centuries SC/ST were descreminated. SO do u think just by turning the twist you can have equality. A lot of worst things happened in india for centuries (Sati etc) Good thing is that today we have laws to prevent that. If you want Dalits to make progress, pressure government to implement those laws not asking for reservations. If u are on bed in a hospital for an emergency, do you want a below average guy who secured seat by reservation to operate on you. Just think don’t play the caste card on this one. What I say is yes there was desciminiation but there is not need to desciminate upper caste’s today. All we can hope is eradicate complete caste system and then have strong, good free primary, seconday education, and let the right candidate get a seat. These politicians are just creating differences between us. If u still want to continue the discussion I am happy for that please feel free to respond back to this comment.

  87. I dont see a solution for this as long as every person’s vote is valued the same in democracy. The only solution is to measure the value of the vote based on the person who is casting it. A person who has immense political awareness and can think above the factors like caste, place of the leader for national elections is valid the same right now when compared to a person who considers the above mentioned factors.

The solution is to create India with people who has broad minded approach in the way they look at India,it’s needs.

It will require a sustained approach for the next 30 to 40 years. Educate the people to make them realise the importance of their vote. This cannot be achieved by simply stating to him that one opinion is right and another is wrong.

The only way they can realise its importance is when they strive for achieving it. It is like we don’t realise the value of 10Rs given to us by father when we were in our childhood. The same 10Rs will value us the most when we toil hard for it.

The solution I see for most of the problems is dont give away the voting right to a person freely as if taking birth in India will automatically entitle them to vote.

Give voting rights to a person only if he is eligible for it.Create a standard form of evaluating a person’s vote based on the factors like his education, the importance of his profession for the country like doctors, engineers, people in defence services.

My great grand father kicks your great grand fathers rear, so you kick me below my stomach, and its supported by so called arseholes who sit in the highest house of the country.
every one over here must have read of instances where people with -ve marks have been given seats in professional colleges, what kind of engineers and doctors do they make. i do read a lot about so called social workers who are pro reservation shouting against the nri quota in professional colleges, may be they dont know one thing that to get into a nri quota one got to atleast qualify through entrance test and for sc,ST and BC you donot even need to pass the qualifying exam, just sitting in the exam hall is enough for them.
not only that the so called social workers who are pro reservation do say that the so called reservation is also implemented in america, may be they need to google the term affirmative action, they would know the meaning of that term. over here(i am in US too) they would not reserve any percentage for blacks and some percentage for asians and so on. merit still has a role to play unlike in india.
BTW does anyone know what kind of scrutiny do the security personal for our beloved politicians go through, they got to make 80% of the bullets that they fire in a month on the target just to keep their position in the special security(black cat commandoes) intact. may be its high time we introduce reservation in that, like people who could not even hit the target once in say 1000 bullets be a black cat commando because of his last name, thats when we are going to see netas shitting in their dothies.

  92. increasing seats in IITs and IIMs is not the solution for this problem. They are trying to divert the problem.

Please, OBC candidates you also think with your heart. Is it fair to get seat in IITs without merit?

To develop our country, we need talented people in higher posts (like engineers and doctors) and that is only posible by giveing importance to merit. Country means not only so called forward casts but you too.

If their aim is to uplift so called back-ward casts then give them scholarships encorage to do hardwork and study well. But this is not definitely the solution for the problem. But their aim is to get votes. See how sad it is….

Any one read this interview from Arjun Singh??. I do not know how you might be felt, but It does look like he doesn’t have a clue about what he is really talking about. He didn’t answer even a single question correctly and nor there any logic/reasoning to his answers when the facts are put forward. Well, if this is the standard of our leaders, it doesn’t take an einstein to figure out where our country is going..:-).

I am quite certain when I say this, our elected leaders do not really care for people or country. All they care is how to establish themselves better for next election and also how to make the money while in the power. They don’t really care whether they are dividing the country or uniting. For them, division of the country works better. This is a well known fact from our British rulers “Divide and Rule” - They know that this works wonders in establishing themselves as leaders and implementing it.

Shall I give another recent and good example of how this devide and rule works?? Rember Ayodya communal clashes involving Ram Mandir and Babri Massid. If I remember correctly, no one knew much about BJP before that and it was only restricted few parts of the country. After the clases and introducing the division among people, they managed win the election and even got hold Prime Ministership by forming coalition. They could have gotten even more seats, but then ruling congress party decided to allow the distruciton of Masside and lessed BJP’s stand on the issue (Read the PV’s biography - he mentioned this topic there). All politics.. we are like ‘gorrela manda’ to follow them.

Ok, coming to the point, there is only one solution to all this mess,
    1. Do a fresh census and figure out how many castes are there in the country and what is the percet of each one - Need to do this state wide and also nation wide to cover quotas for state and nation level instituions and jobs.
    2. Allocate quotas for each caste seperately for primary, higher and advanced education.
    3. Allocate and force quota in all jobs including govt and private jobs.

I am not sure how good this will be, but people from different castes won’t fight with each other. All the people have to do then is fight among same caste/sect. This sure divides the country, but feels somewhat secure as all they can do is to compete among themselves. Even if people from any caste plays tricks to increase their population growth to get more quota, they still have same competition among themseves i.e., 100 people 10 seats is same as 1000 people 100 seats. You see all problems solved..:-).

I got a better idea, why don’t we geographically divide based on the caste. We can establish seperate colleges, jobs etc in that region. This way everbody’s problem will be solved in one shot.. i.e., you don’t even need special quota in assembly/parliament seats as each caste will have their own representatives from their regions. Also, since one caste doesn’t come into contact with other in any aspect except in assembly or parliament, it avoids all the headaches of stupid communal clashes and govt can run smoothly. Then, parliant can decide on ministers on round-robin fashion so that each region/caste will get a chance to develop themselves..:-). No more complaints from any one. We may even decided to split into different countries.. but who cares..:-).

I know I am getting carried away here, but you see I am getting such great ideas on how to improve the country..(Am I??). May be, I should have become a political leader instead of doing these stupid jobs.

When I was applying for the US visa, in one of the editorials I saw an article saying that reservations should be implemented in the US visas too. How insane? There is a limit for everything. How greedy can people become. I may earn more money in US, but I will always regret for not being in India. Iam sure there must be many people like me who are feeling the same. What did we do? We were not born in a BC/SC/ST family. We are indirectly pushed away from our own country. When will this end? I hope this agitation about reservations will spread through out the country. There should be an end this. I dont blame the BCs, I blame the stupid politicians who are luring them. I think other medical colleges and professional colleges will not come forward because majority of them have reservations.

New Delhi: A man tried to set himself on fire during a rally organised by medical students and doctors against the Government’s reservation policy in Delhi on Saturday evening.

Rishi, 23, from East Delhi was immediately rushed to Lok Nayak Jaiprakash hospital after he tried to set himself afire at the Ramlila grounds.

Rishi received 40 per cent burns on the hand and the chest before the police doused the fire.

When asked which college he belonged to, Rishi said, “I am not a student. I am working.” Police said Rishi did his Class XII from Bihar a few years ago and is a gutka seller in Shahdara.

A self immolation attempt was reported from Cuttack, Orissa, but police are still investigating whether it was related to the reservation controversy.

Surendra Mohanty, a PG student of SCB Medical College, took everybody by surprise when he tried to set himself ablaze near a police post inside the hospital.

He was immediately overpowered by onlookers and agitating students, who were about to take out a candlelight procession.

Mohanty did not suffer burns. City DSP Kumarmani Meher said an investigation was in progress to ascertain the motive behind his attempt.

It was yet to be confirmed whether the self-immolation attempt was linked to the anti-reservation agitation, Meher said.

    —-
    Sujay,
Did you get a chance to read the point system based solution proposed by JNU professor Purusotham Agarwal. This is by far best solution given by anyone.

I do agree about the reservation to those who deserved. But I strongly believe that it is getting misused a lot. My argument is dalits, OBCs etc or anyone, whose parents are able to give them good education should not get ‘any’ reservation. If they do, it is kind of cheating the system, isn’t it?? The reservation provides a backdoor for people who should really use the front-door for schools or jobs.

So, the reservation should be given only to those who doesn’t get the opportunity to succeed only because of the ‘caste’? Isn’t this a valid stament?? You say reservation is only practical way. Isn’t possible to deny the reservation for kids of parents who already benifited from it??

What I hate most is how the politicians are using this reservation topic to get the votes. There is already so much reservation in state colleges.. and why no fight for just few seats on IITS all of a sudden?? In Govt jobs any engg degree same. Isn’t it because MNC’s are preferring IIT students??

Now why there should be reservation in private jobs?? Imagine, if you start a company and put all energy and savings in it, do you want people who best fits your requirements and make the company successfull or do you follow all kinds of reservations and take the person who you can find in that quota though you know it is not the right fit??

This is all political gimmic and these politicians are using everybody for their own benifit using Devide and rule policy. If things are going well and smooth, who will vote for them?? Do you know a well known saying “you make your living by creating the problems and (trying to) solving them”

In TN, there is 69% govt reservation in total and in most priviate colleges there is institution quota. So what is left for some one who worked very hard and doesn’t make it and bunch of his friends who studied in same private school made it because of reservation? doesn’t he/she have a reason to get outraged??

You have mentioned about harvard giving admission from top 25%. Actually, you have been mistaken about their admission process. I have been in US long enough and even studided here so I know how it works. It is true that they don’t just look at academics. They look at overall performance of the students like recommendations, marks, entrance scores, sports, other activities such helping community, research papers, part-time work experience etc. The reason for this is they know that versatile person is more effecient that the one who just sticks to acads. I think this difference should be noted before comparing US admission process.

your views are interesting and everybody has right to express their viewpoint. I am not denying or correcting what you said, but this is merely my viewpoint of how the system should be.

  124. I got so mad when I heard someone burnt an effigy of Infosys Chairman Narayana Murthy. I really do not understand this. Though the company doesn’t differentiate, just becuase they cannot pass the interview, they burned the effigy?? You got the same education and you can find a govt job very easily and now they want reservations in every breath we take.

Though it is not really intended this way, reservations are working like parasite. Now muslims are asking for reservations, folks from POK are asking special quota, and many casts are asking them to be included in BCs (some casts like Yadav’s are well advanced, but still get reservation) and tomorrow Naxals will ask for their quota because they couldn’t send their kids to schools as they live in forests..:-).

I have read his biography and it was very inspiring to know that inspite of the limited resources and financial constraints he established a company, really struggled for almost 9 years before making it big. If you really work hard towards something, you do not feel it right to give something for free. I don’t belive he is doing anyting wrong. He is contributing so much to charity and primary education to ‘SAME PEOPLE’ for whose benifit these pro-reservation folks are figting. Or I wonder, these pro-rervation folks are really fighting for the needed - who is getting the most benifit??

Apparently, he even got admission for batchelors into IITs, but couldn’t go because of finances, but was able to do Masters in an IIT as he could manage scholorship. This tells us inspite of him being borne in uppercast and deserved, he couldn’t get it. May be we should think about this rather than fighting for reservations. He still made a mark for himself only because he belived in the true hard work and there is no ‘backdoor’ for the success.

  126. For reservation to go away - the upper caste people should “leave their last name ” that conveys their “Upper casteness”, They should also leave their “PRIDE” of being an upper caste and the LOW look they give to people of lower caste. This “last name” and “pride” are the reason for the antireservation group getting very limited support from OBCs. Even the educated and forward thinking OBCs who are against reservation are unhappy at these 2 points. If these are done, the support base to the antireservation group will really become big. It was heartening to see IITians changing the last name to BHARAT.

There is no point making a violent protests, strikes and things of that sort against reservations. You have a powerful wepon to eliminates such politicians.

Based on the study I made, 85% of the graduates do not excersise their vote in the elections. They choose not to excercise their RIGHT. While some people do not want to stay in the queue, others say it does not matter to them who ever wins or loses. Others say corrupt politicians.. no point voting them..

There is no point making a hue and cry over here. You have an option of eliminating such forces, in your hands. VOTE. Choose the best candidate among the contestants.

You don’t need to contest elections..
    Excercise your VOTE..
    Just a VOTE..

  133. almost all ppl oppose the reservation, they said that the base is wrong, thats true at some extent,i m not a big favorer or opposer of the thing going on right now in the country.still, i think personnaly that there must be some medium way by which all can get whatever they deserve.govt trying to give them reservation to make them equall to the other stream of the society.
but is it successful?is it all that the poor village ppl want?nop, if govt is genuinely thinking for their benefits, than they should first improve the primary school education facility in villages, where school is running for 1 to 7 std in a small tuta futa building and few like 10 15 studetns from all std studid togather by a single teacher.no primary care facilities at all,the primary health centers have no enough drugs,no medical officers, nothing.this problems should adressed first,by giving merely reservation in some high instutues, abt which this ppl may have noteven heard at all,is not the solution. i m mainly talking abt the poor village ppl and not the creamlyer ppl.
at some extent its good that u r helping ppl to study who r economically low,but reservation is not the option at all, give them scholarship, make them stand with dignity and pride and not making them weak by giving this wheelchairs of reservaions.

How dare are u to speak about hindus. We are speaking about reservations not religion. If you dont know that just put your mouth shut. And remember Ur religions are under the mercy of hindus.Look at the other countries like pakistan and afghanisthan.Be happy for that.Next time speaking about hindus just get lost from this country.Where u can study without reservations there.U people are dying on hindus. And mind ur language it makes ur religion foul.Hindus are the best and that is why u people are living peacefully. If u happen to be a hindu belonging to a lower caste then be ashamed of ur words.Speak about caste dicrimination not religion. If u were in any other islamic countries u would be slaughtered by now.HINDUS ARE GREAT.ACCEPT THE FACT

  136. Hey who said upper castes discriminate the lower castes.Where are u rahul.I belong to an upper caste and I have most of my friends belonging to lower caste. And that is with everyone.Does ur friends discriminate u.I dont think so.And thats India.Maybe that was in past.So why u people need reservations.Everyone should be treated equally.Wake up and dont speak dirty language.

  137. Hi Rahul, I think there is nothing wrong in discriminating people like you. the topic is about reservation and merit status.. not about religion at all. you have no right to bring it in the debate. the person who is not religious tolerant first has no right to say any thing. Sorry to this mate..To your point we never created SC,ST obc etc.. as you know we all studied in school books , speaking about caste is Sin, crime etc, but when you reach 10th standard we need to fill this sheet yar which is shocking!!!The same teacher fills it!!!!!its not upper class any thing .. its politics…it you still feel it must be there ..then u and and those who support should go the doctors who passed and practicing with reservation for checkup and life saving not to the the genious and merit doctors ..atleast doctors!!!” where i lost grand dad in village”. Wake up friend. dont be religious… reservation to certatin stage is accepted but not in professional jobs..where merit is needed.

  138. Dear friends,

The one which is said above is not to hurt any one either religously or professionally.. I AM AGAINT RESERVATION. reservation up to high schooling is ok (12th standard) but not after that.. it is killing the Enthu to work hard and sprit of young students showing the discrimination and hatred among own people.IT can be based on financial status for a merit students not on what we have presently..

( Dear rahul , innocent and ignorant person - never, ever try to establish or build you career based on religion.. be how you are — no need need to change or get accepted by other religion, growth comes on hard work and sincerity not u and any one being accepted by some one)..

  139. you people talk at about equality and one guy you(fc’s) want to get rid of politicians they should be treated by sc,st,bc’s,how come he is in illusion that that fc doctors are good.In india, you see doctors who sell kidneys and who takes out kidneys without patient notice are all fc people.for that guy who wrote that man u need to grow up if any guy who comes to bachelor’s on reservation quota is not at the bottom of the class ranking and suckers know u people don’t get anything only on intelligence how many times it came out that educational institutions have leaked the paper and how ur fc politicians recommend there people and you talk about merit right u people come in adminitration quotas into colleges where that came from u people have money because it didn’t earn them u looted our people and made money.where is fucking equality in u talk at lengths about bobby jindal recently shilpa shetty about racism and every shit but wat u people do in india u never talk about that
hey these guys who study in i know iit’s they get good offers if they didn’t they didn’t do well in their bachelors and blaming us for their mistakes and i was much better student than other fc guys in my college but fc guys used to go to their caste they used to get their mid term papers and final papers from the professors that how they got higher percentages than us and what is the worst thing is the professors to tell openly that they will paper to fc people and they will more marks to them.such is the plight in india.Everybody wants to about their problems but look at all over india wats going on
but god is there but i am in good position in u.s than lot of my other classmates and u know fc people who good lesser scores in gre, toefl they came here through recommendations from politicians they still continue to show thei caste feeling in u.s guys u never going to end these things and their is no solution for this problem.Think over it

  140. Dear SC,

Have you read every thing properly, I said reservation can be to certain stage ,on financial status..but according to you it looks like reservation should be given basing on caste..well i do respect your feelings what would have happened to you , but thats not the same in major part of india…reservation on financial status is accepted …I want to know what effect caste play…if your effort is 100% and hard working???Do u think none other than FC will have any reco….according to u????? May be the teachers or prof whom u come across are fools but that doesnt mean all are like that… lets not take cast at all into pic in india like developing countries in educational and professional bodies ….According to you then
( only for an example in ckt team if high hits 4 or 6 its same but some one like u hits its 8 and 12) if this looks foolish so does reservation .

Equality should be there i respect all and every one are intelligent enough to know their future!!!!

  141. Hey rahul …wat happened to u ..the debate is about reservation in educational institution rite …y u r bringing all unneccesery stuff’s lik politician , religion and all man …
See reservation should be there ..even i accept .. but do u think all the lower caste one r still suffering lot with no finance …not at all man ..grow up .. there r many i can show u ..that ..the people who belongs to sc are living much more better life than normal middle class even upper class people and all. ….the situations and all were completely shifted man …they r very few …
According to me govt ..should provide ..reservation according to family financial status ..not according to the caste ..and all …

Finally a person who is well talented ..can easily face ..all these ..its not lik tat ..only if he given all facility he will do things …

Think Abraham Lincoln , Ther r many such people ..yaar …grow up ..

  142. u FC’s dont deserved that status. U people already throwed us 1000 years back into underdevelopement. indian economy is increasing because of our effort in education not u FC’s. U cant even protect ur own vedic studies. U people dont realize it and still protest on us. U FC’s are responsible for what world called us as ” Bleady Indian”. i suffered a lot because of u in US. showing a caste feeling infront a highly civilized people, who are rulers( whites) from many years. U guys cant watch us developing. A MERIT STUDENT NEVER TALK LIKE U PEOPLE.

  143. Dear BC,
your are exactly right –people who are really intelligent will never talk like you. Who has thrown whom 1000 years back????? what do u mean doesnt deserve the status… topic is about reservation in education!!!! why to bring caste in the middle of every thing…this really shows u have the highest caste feeling… and wnat to get sympathy from others by saying your are low cast… why all caste caste…. why dont u think like…together .. and every thing is same!!! already all govt jobs filled with reservation according to u what u said.. i am sorry if not all atleast many???? but then why are they insisting in private sector also…u say all merit is because of u.. improvement bacause of u???? not willing to accept even now because of every one!!both govt and pri are equally good.. as long as u thing like this there is no growth mate!!!!!u thing only vedic for fc?? nothing else ?who said that ?then if that is the case then sorry to say u mate urs should be some thing else to do not into eng as well… really sorry to say…. no caste is confined to any profession. its intelligence and hard work..people who cannot do that look for these reasons….

  145. OK..This reservation should stop only when a guy from a upper class guy marries a lower caste guy. If this is not possible, then Banning reservation is also not possible. So guyzz who ever said that reservations has to be stopped, go ahead and marry lower caste girls, If u cannot then shut ur ass and go and do your work. You think about Reservations only when it comes to education and ” Rights”. When it comes to marriage, everybody Knows what upper caste is and what lower caste is. So all the people who say reservation has to be stopped, go ahead and marry a lower caste( S.C, S.T, B.C) boys and girls, Then Lets talk about this Topic..if not shut ur ass and let it go whats going on!!!!!!

  147. There should be no reservation in education. If possible all educational institutions should implement some kind of uniform structure in admitting students into colleges. No one should be admitted based on his caste, creed or religion. India is now home to some of the world’s renowned institutions like the IITs and the IIMs, and issues like reservation trying to damage India’s stature in the world, should never be entertained. There should be a strong NO to reservation in education or any field where talent plays primary role. Students have had enough with this reservation funda in smaller colleges and universities, and this should not go on with the torchbearers of Indian Education. All politicians who say YES to reservation should start using their brains and think more about the country’s well being and not of their own advantage.
    Thanks.

because of this reservation system, i didnt got admission in masters, I got 63% in bachelors, and tht was more than enough to secure a sit in my city,, but u know what, i didnt got a sit in masters, and when i seen a guy with 43% marks got a seat in masters (just because of his surname AADIVASI), i was nearly crying,,,,

What was my fault in tht, i studied hard to get admission, but just because of this reservation,

  152. First of all I am asking “Who didvided the country on the basis Caste”, It was Brahmins.

Mnusastra and all other scriptures denied the “Education” for Sudras, Woman, Tribes. For the 95% of the population denied Education. Those who ignored those scriptures read “Vedas”, Kings Cut throats.

Kings and all upper castes owned land and business, brahmins served as Mantri’s and owned all temples. All other 90% of the population just lived like “Servents”.

Since Ages same thing, upper caste people only enjoyed all the wealth.

Still 90% of wealth is owned by upper castes. All Businesses, Land all other opportunities are owned by “Upper Caste”.

When we say Democracy means for the people, by the people to the people, get the votes of 90% OBC’s, SC’s, ST’s and support not less than 10% upper castes.

WE NEED OUR SHARE OF INDIA, WE ARE MORE THAN 90% OF POPULATION. THIS IS NOT THE AGE OF MANUSHASTRA. WE WILL FIGHT FOR RIGHTS. NO MORE HARRASMENT.

  153. I am one of the million victims who did not get a seat in engineering and now I have settled in other country as a result of Reservation . I am not feeling proud that I am making money but I am feeling ashamed that I have to look for opportunities somewhere else instead of my own Mother land. Even after 60 years of independence there is no equality. This is because of the uneducated politicians being in rule, a rule should be introduced where only a Degree holder only can be allowed to get a ticket to stand in elections.
