Indian slum girl ‘makes good’ (Misc.)

image

“They (Parents & Others) said a girl from the slums could never get become an engineer or work for the big technology companies.” –Fatima

Most of the high-paying jobs in India’s IT industry go to the privileged elite. But, with the help of her husband, one woman has managed to earn her university degree as well as a job at on of India’s top IT companies.

Fatima lives with her husband in a slum area in the Indian town of Visakhapatnam. Her husband is illiterate, earning his money as a street food hawker. He makes about two dollars a day.

Six years ago, when Fatima was only 15, her parents took her out of school and arranged her marriage, a story common to many other young girls in her neighborhood.

Fatima said: “When I told him about my dreams, he was very encouraging. He saved money from his meager earnings to help me go to school and then to engineering college.”

They went hungry to pay for her books and university fees and Fatima’s mother was even asked by neighbors to dissuade her from studying.

“I am a poor illiterate man. I did not want her to be like me,” Salary said. “Now that she has worked hard and achieved so much, people will look at us with respect.”

For the time being Fatima helps her husband at his kiosk in the evening, but soon she will begin a job at one of India’s top information technology companies where she will earn $600 a month.

    Congrats to fathima

its very glad to see that a poor girl from slums has graduated in engineering. i think in todays India where education comes with a big price tag ,we can understand how much this family might have toiled to get to where they are today.

Conditions within the families like fatima’s are themselves not conducive for education. and our education system make it sure that people like her dont even dare to think of gaining medicine/ engg degree.

Our nation shud develop in complete sense,
the development in India is endemic -limited to few people and few sectors. we often dont define it growth if our leg or head grows big. we consider a matter of worry.

if the gap between the have and have-nots widens, its no way development.

education needs to be subsidized for poor not on basis of caste/religion

yes a educational performance level shud be marked for
people to claim benefits unlike the current flawed
    reservation system-blindly based on caste-wherein SC/ST
have no qualifying marks getting a free ticket wherein other are denied a chance even after investing effort and years of time

neither islam nor any other religion discourages women education
    infact
quran says -god loves educated more and those ignorant would never be equal to people with knowledge
islam says-if there in girl under your gaurdianship, give her good manners and education and marry her to a good person - these are the deeds gods loves

Hello Mr. Mentor. U better watch what u are commenting about. This bloody caste system has been prevalent since when aryans and dravians have come into existence. Dont u think that SC/ST dont get good marks??. If SC/ST has never got the reservations people from high caste has… will… and will always deprive SC/ST ’s from getting into universities and jobs. If the high caste people are getting good marks it is all bcoz of the reservations to overtake SC/ST and most of all to deprive SC/ST.

SC/ST were and are still deprived bcoz of the consequences of these bloody caste system, so what are you talking about??. The most important matter here is that Fatima worked hard despite of her situation… its not the issue of caste. What if you come to know that Fatima is an SC/ST???

Mentor is suppose to give a better advice and not comment on the sensitive issues where you dont have any experience.

  23. 23 visionmaker2020 Jun 11th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

    hi guys,
u did it again. fantastic. a small change should bring changes in the thinking of the society. everyone is equally resposible for individual growth and countrys growth. bloody private education its like unreachable to a middleclass family so haow a poor man will afford it. why cant the govenment education be like a private institutions without burden on parents for fees? for kindergarden children now a days we pay hefty fees . so imagine how much it will cost for a poor people who cant even earn 1 dollar per day.
changes has to be brought in the education style.

the above link is only for opening the eyes of hypocrites like Mentor who has no sense bout the complicated issues of a country like India.we want all our brothers and sisters to get educated, we realize the diversities nd pblms in our society .we will continue to provide reservations/whatever necessary to ppl in need. Ppl like u who r a pakisthani shamelessly posing as an Indian will never have the sensibility to understand such true values of live..u get a life instead of spreading ur religious venom every wr possible..
Let indians live in harmony unlike in any of ur so called muslim countries…

    HI
some people alway try to find fault with other.
in the First comment i praised Fathima

    is it anyway wrong

some one say iam a hypocrite
    sorry sir iam not
some people due to there ignorance both muslim and hindu dont encourage women education.

it not their religion which advocates this but what does support their thinking is myth and their baseless assumption abt religion and old practices.

Unfortunate a majority of muslim dont read quran nor understand nor follow it , so is the case with hindus they dont read or follow vedas .

most of them donot even have clue abt whats in them

then what they follow is their own assumptions abt religion some stupid age old baseless tradition or fake baba who himself has no idea of what he advocates.

i believe in islam which refer women as equal half humanity.
if half of a community is sitting back home ignorant, then it cannot fully prosper.
so i am a strong supporter of women working in all major field except in fields where they are exploited like cinema or indecent advertising wherein they are just present as show pieces and i dont want girls to be paraded semi nude or scantily dress for selling shaving cream to car battery to underwear where they are not at all needed or a remixed song for that matter .
