Dropping Rahul Dravid .. Is it Ridiculous ?? (Discussions)
By Novell on Nov 1, 2007 in Cricket, Discussions
Batting maestro Rahul Dravid was dropped by the selectors for the first two of the five One-day Internationals against Pakistan next month. This is the first time Dravid, who resigned as captain after the recent England tour has been omitted from the ODI team since the late 1990s.
Selection committee chairman Dilip Vengsarkar said that Dravid was ‘rested’ and hoped he would make a ‘comeback soon’ to the team. The former cricketers including Kiran More, Navjoth Sidhu and Ajay Jadeja showed their disappointment about this decision. Former chairman of selectors Kiran More believes there is a hidden agenda behind Rahul Dravid’s omission from the Indian squad. More said “If a person like Rahul has suddenly resigned from captaincy, and now he is being dropped, there is some agenda behind it.” Navjot Sidhu has said it is a shame that one of the finest cricketers of all time is being treated like this.
Guys !! What is your take on this? Do you think BCCI selectors have an agenda behind dropping Rahul Dravid? What do you think of the decision made by the selection committee? Please share your comments.

This is all media fuss. He was just dropped for 2 odi’s. It wud also serve like some refreshment to him. Even rahul wont have any objections regarding this i think. Its all media creation.

But i must say that,he was rusty and lethargic in the previous series. He gotta get into groove and show every one who really he is.I wish him all the best.:)

this should not happen.its a shame on BCCI. how can dravid be dropped for the reason that he didn’t played well in just one series.he served the country for many years and as a result of politics he was dropped now
pavan | Nov 1, 2007 | Reply
yes i agree with naresh.this is the fuss usually created by media.no one knows what is in the mind of selectors and their strategy, rahul did not play well till that point that is fine, the selectors know what they are doing and let them do their jobs.If and you were to know what is right and wrong in all angels why not we in that job.One way it might serve as a refreshment and no one knows y is he behaving like that after he is down as captian–its not old dravid that we are seeing now–something is haunting him.

Guys-to whomever who chooses to oppose BCCI’s decision, it’s very easy to sit in your chair, and criticize everything happening in indian cricket. They know what they are doing..he’s only ‘rested’ for 2 ODI’s so that he can find his groove and form back. Sometimes, taking some time off, does good to a player. Even teams like Australia, South Africa use this strategy. Our media is just stupid, and they just like to “talk” and make a big FUSS out of everything. Make one of them a selector, and he’ll know what it’s like to handle indian cricket team. We need to give them a break, and not create unnecessary pressure on selectors, otherwise, our team will never be able to develop fully.

if he is rested for the first 2 ODIs, it wud have made some sense. But he was dropped, in fact replaced by a useless batsman. Thants what is the problem. As long as the board has members from mumbai, no gud is gonna happen to india cricket….

I really dont understand that how come viru is in form…..?

Its OK to drop someone because of performance but look who got the cap – Sehwag ? That doesn’t sound right. He is a disaster, so is selection team.

thank god he got dropped atleast some new comers will get a chance to play.if all these old sheeps stuck with many years then how can a new comer will get a chance. its good he got dropped.

Dravid has got another 3-4 years of cricket in him. Its all the game of Mumbaikers against ..which is prooved yet again. rahul is one of finest cricket ever seen in Indian history. He won the Test series in England after almost 2 decades just before his failure Australia series, selectors shouldn’t have treated him this badly..These days ppl are dying to become captains..but he resigned after successfull tour …one should have guts and courage to do it
Hope Agarkar will return to team just bcz he is from mumbai and he servivied all these years god knows… Also Sachin failed in more than 2 series recently…how come soft corner to others!!

No, its not good to drop a good player just the sake of some bad performances. Every player faces a bad performance time in his career but it doesnot mean to drop a best player from the team. I think what should I India do when player will go Australia for Test matches without Dravid. Yaar I think its horrible. I know new comers has talent and guts to make team victory but they dont have experience. Its come from Old and experienced players.
I think Dravid is a victim of team and selectors politics. He should take some action against this decision.
Daisy | Nov 2, 2007 | Reply
Its okay to drop any player from the team, irrelevant of their seniority, if his performance is below par. But rahul’s performance wasnt bad before he left his captaincy. Something or we can say someone was haunting him since then. Selectors didnt say first that he is rested, they said that he is dropped from the team and should play for his state and prove himself to comeback in to the team. wat do that say..it is definetly RIDICULOUS!!
Aravind | Nov 2, 2007 | Reply
It is good decision to drop Dravid, He could be one of the best batsman in the world, but not an aggressive player. Because of his decisions we did not get good margin of series wins where we supposed to be. He should take this positiveley and concentrate on test matches and show what he is. But selectors should do the same on Sachin and Ganguly too, if they are really talking about rotation.
VR | Nov 2, 2007 | Reply
He is just dropped for 2 matches, and the player whose average is 10 in last 10 odis is dropped,,,
its all media fuss, nothing else, he will be back in to the team from third ODI, for the ppl who don’t know tht we have long long cricketing shedual, So dropping him for couple of matches will do good for him and team, as we need him badly in test matches,,,
Hope he will come back as strongly as Ganguly came back in to the team,,,
Nikunj | Nov 2, 2007 | Reply
yeah its just a small break for him through his decade long career…as the media shud understand that he is a human being and doesnt have to prove anything because he is already a legend!!!
nan | Nov 2, 2007 | Reply
I think Dilip Veng has taken the Proper Step of Dropping him and given the Chance to New Good Performers, who are more powerful.
I think everyone should get the Chance to show their own performances, If one player is playing for 15 years, then how about others, where they should go, what they should do. Even there are Hundreds of Good Boys who can do many times better than.
Now the New Young Team has done the Good Job, than the Real Indian Team.

Let him take some rest and come back strong. We will wait for that great strokes of Dravid. Take it easy guys, stay positive. Don’t rack your brains now as why he is removed. Media is really playing with our minds these days

The 20-20 world cup has taught us the lesson that even without seniors we can win and anyway these seniors players have been blessed with the opportunity to play at least 3 world cups which they could not even win once. These seniors players do not play for the team but play technically perfect and are more interested in creating personal records so let’s give a chance to the new blood. And this old blood should be advised to take up a job of coaching.

It is absultely right to dro draid at this point of time. Even if dravid is in form he should be dropped partially from one day form of cricket. He is playing fast but not according to the caliber that he shld play with his stats. He is still kind of slow for todays very fast pace games. One day cricket pace is changing after almost every two years. Sehwag can play fast atleast and if he gets out early even then it does not effect much cos dravid has not played for last seven matches. And he shld be rested for some period so that he can come over mental and physical problems and then he can be put in the team smartly as according to the need of the particular game.

It is totally ridiculous to drop a player like Dravid….. it was not so long ago that the whole indian team used to quiver and run to dravid to rescue many a disaster innings….
Vengsarakar is not fit for a selector…. he is completely biased in his approach. How many times Sachin has failed and still they persisted with him.
And one more thing is we shud not get carried away with 20-20 performance as we saw what Aus did to us in the One-Dayers.
kish | Nov 2, 2007 | Reply
No one said Dravid was dropped. Did anyone? It was just he was given rest, as he is not form. We have seen his performance in last series, which is not acceptable with any player irrespective his good history he has. So let see if he could come back. Hope he does and then do some good job before he retire. He need to put effort to come back.

I think its fair to drop him for 2 ODI’s. I totally agree that he is a great player and served to the country in passioned way. But he need to perform well among all the guyz and catch selectors eye.
I wish him all the best.

all the persons who missunderstood Dravid’s ablity or thinking of him as a record collector, for all those who think so i will make one thing clear with out him in indian cricket in oneday’s india might have lost so many matches, which might have taken india to down
to 10 in rankings , because him ganguly and Tendulkar we atleast went to finals in that world cup .He is only one who stood for team in many matches who played selfless and gave full commitment to the team.
Comming to Dhoni do you think he really played well in southafrica series when we are there for one dayers and test’s and even in england tour
just check the records to see if he played with his ablity never actually he should be removed from the team when did not play in england and southafrica then one thing made it clear that he can play in indian pitchs only ok i hope you understood who is good commitment player for india
He is the only player plays for the sack of country not for records
anand | Nov 2, 2007 | Reply
we have thousands of good players we cannot relay on any particular player it may be dravid, ganguly, tendulkar, or dhoni every one has to be given a chance
Team has to be changing depending on the performance not depend on name of the player, because these eleven people represents 10000000 people so its very competitive.

I would rather not treat it (BCCI’s decission) as bad as it was in the case of Souav. Dravid has been undoubtedly a great cricketer and one thing we must take into consideration, Dravid as a defeneding cricketer is of enourmos potential. However in order for India to keep up with the demand of currently fast playing cricket, it is a ‘fair decession’.
‘Starism’ has always been the case with the Indian Cricket, and it results into demeaning ‘Team work’. Coruption, Partiality, Racism and even Pressure are siblings of the BCCI.
Learning from No.1’s (Aussie’s Collective team work & playing smart cricket ), innovating the approaches and by eradicating
Individulaism India can be on top of the ranks for a longer term atleast.
Let’s pray to ALLAH for India’s success against Pakistan for the upcoming series….Ameen
Wishing Indian Team Good Luck

Hi guys,
What the Heck,
i say u better Drop All So called BIG 3 , Sachin, Ganguly and Dravid, Enough of their Service! They are Legends so let them retire as Legends right now.
I hear people say that the youngsters can not play with out them , as if we are Winning a Lot b’cos of them !!! If the youngsters loose with out these Big 3 , let them loose ( As if they are winning now) ,
No one is Born Successfull , they are made with experience, with out this Big 3 , it would be refreshing and Inspiring for the Long waiting Talent since many years. Even if they loose initially Time will make them Tough and Successfull if the BIG 3 retire ( which they would never want to! ALAS)
If they dont , let the selectors do the job , they are legends and their Services have been good , but they better leave for the Youngsters now.

- I would like to ask you, will you accept dropping Sachin tendulkar (or) Saurav Ganguly in the same scenario.
- Can you check the stats of past 1yr of each player and count how many players should have been dropped for what reasons dravid is dropped for first two ODI’s.
- May be dravid is not an aggressive player, it doesn’t mean he has not done anything for the nation. If there was no dravid, we would not have tasted the successes which the team has not tasted for years now.
- Indian cricket is all about politics and sentiments of crazy fans. If their favourite is dropped, its wrong. If others are dropped its ok. Its not about emotions. Its about how many matches did dravid fail. If it was a right decision to drop dravid, why was not sachin dropped when he was in the same form like dravid. Why was there a wait to drop ganguly when he was not performing…….??? Why weren’t you people saying that ganguly should be dropped or sachin should be dropped.
- If you talk about dropping dravid because he is not aggressive, do you think ganguly and sachin are playing with same aggression. If they are not, should they be removed from the team.
- I want to ask one more question. If the selectors think they know what they are doing with, why didn’t they have guts to say dravid was dropped instead of saying he is rested. If you say selectors know what they are doing and you accept with them, is sehwag in his current form, the right person to be in the team????

I’m disappointed too. I mean, Dravid had been backbone of India’s batting line up since day 1. We’ve had so much instability in top order that never seems consistent (no offense to sachin). Dravid has proved his reliability day in and day out, no matter what situation India is in. Dropping seems unreasonable but in a way might give him more time to take mind of things and comeback strong. Wish u luck Dravid!

I had so much confidence in Dravid in last odi against aus.

Dravid Dropped for 2 odi’s!! not fair. But it shows some good signs that BCCI is now serious, as soon as someone picks the rust, whether its batting or bowling they are seated. It’s a good gesture, atleast players will be serious about there performance. Some more players need seating. The best players didnt win any world cup till this date, are they really best, or its just the hype.
10 points to ricky ponting, and aussies, he said Aussie team is the king of 50 over match.
Come on India take the game seriously.
Dravid will come back with form. He is really one of the finest players. Good luck Mr Dravid.

I think the decision taken by BCCI is fair enough guys bcoz we have to look for a team which will perform well in the series on a whole but not for the interest of an individual. Look at the Australian team ,even the mighty micheal bevan was put aside for not performing well, they just look for the consistency of a player but not on how much he scored in a particular match. Every one knows the good consistency of dravid but he couldn’t make it this time. India is a big country and every one should get a chance. It is up to the player who has to play well in every match for getting selected in further matches like Ricky Pointing and Andrew Symonds. Rahul was droppped only for 2 matches so it is up to him to perform well in the rest of the matches.
Indian | Nov 4, 2007 | Reply
I think its not at all big issue on dropping Rahul just for the first two one-days against Pakistan. The former selectors should not get disappointed on this fact, and specialy Kiran More who once kicked out Mr.Sourav Ganguly with some baseless reasons, after Soúrav’s such a great contribution towards Indian cricket, never deserve to open his mouth……..I think Rahul should take some rest and make the way for the new ones………..

I think it is not really a bad decision to drop dravid for 2 odis. By dropping him for two odis does not mean that we have forgotten all his services to the team.If that was the case then there would not be so much media hype. People posting in this thread itself shows that dravid is important for the team. But at the same time look at other teams and their respective legends. They r far more better and consistent than our legends. So no matter if you are big 3 or big 4, important thing is that you should be able to perform ur role as per the team expectations. Afridis role is to play unsafe but fast cricket.Dravids role is to play safe but consistent cricket as per the legendary stats that he has. So if he is slow and not consistent, one has to look for other options at that point of time. And in todays fast paced cricket slowly and slowly slow players would diminish and the only ones who would stay even after being playing slow would be really consistent ones.Era is chngng guys. Come out of old orthodox theories. Experimentation is the only way to acheieve the right blend of talent.
Although noone has forgotten the legendary Dravid. If he was not a good player he would not have stayed in international cricket to score these many runs. But at this point of time the only thing he has to offer is consistency and support to the innings. He is not a flashy player or someone who cloud come and score 30 in 12 balls. So if he is not competent enough, as according to this standards, he should be invloved only in those games where score would be low. And not only dravid everyone who doest fit one knd of job shld not be given that job.
