No Indian University among World’s Top 200 (Discussions)

top_universities

Not a single Indian university has figured in a list of the world’s top 200, this year, while six Chinese universities have made the list. Harvard University has topped the league table of The Times Higher Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, which began three years ago. Runners up have been Cambridge and Oxford at second and third positions, respectively.

The list shows that the top 10 universities are either British or American. In addition to China, the other Asian countries that have figured in the list are Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea.

The IITs, which had been regulars in the rankings of previous years have also not made it to the top 200. It is believed that this is due to the change in evaluation norms. For this year’s survey, each IIT had been assessed independently rather than the IIT system as a whole, as it was done earlier. None of the seven institutes could make its mark in the world’s top rankings. Despite that, IIT Delhi and IIT Mumbai have featured in the top 50 tech institutes world-wide, at 37 and 33, respectively.

So Guys !! What is your take on this? What do you think of the current Education System?

  1. india have quality of professors and students, we all know that…..but for to be a world class university, most important thing is a high quality of administration……..and in this area we also know that indians are totally failed……

  2. I donno on how the survey was done taking what aspects into concern..but our indian level of education is being degraded because of reservations. How will the level of education improve if one gets the rank which he doesnt deserve but purely by reservation.

Also governments should fund universities to improve infrastructure. Lack of infrastructure is the key element of our indian universities for not able to compete with the world.

Only IITs are competing with the world. What abt other universities? Reason..? Because we have more population and being an under developed country we have to lower the standards of education so that ppl pass.

  3. What ever they say, IITs are among the best technologcal universities. You know this when you go out and see the world. You’ll know the standard of education here)in the US). I’ve studied in an average university (far below the standards of an IIT) and yet, i am better than 90 % of the ppl i met. That should explain our standards.

If they take other disciplines also (like arts which i have no idea abt), then they mightbe true.

I don’t think reservations are going to affect a university’s performance that much(although i hate reservations).

  4. Very Well Said Both of you ppl..!!!
Thats very much true. Only if we remove the reservation system and elevate the pass mark level, we can be considered to compete. Unnecessary involvement of politics is also hampering the decision making at the university level..People have the right to speech and taking this for granted, they protest for each and every issue. if one group doesnt like the decision taken, they protest and govt has to bow down to them and same thing repeats with others. Such is the case in INDIA. Even the administration and the grade system has to change. Stricter standards have to be implemented on admissions, curriculum and the otutcome of the student system.

  7. Actually most of these surveys based on the factors such as research(phds, patents, papers ) administration, campus hiring et

Considering the top university harvard student and IIT student or other varsity student, under given circumstances i.e administration (professors, labs, courses) both could or might perform same as the other.

but coming to the research and development “most” of the indian students do not show interest.(i’m saying most not all). this is because of the very nature of
indians. I’m not criticizing but how many parents are encouraging their kids to join in IITs to do research ..answer will be about 20-30%. everybody wants their kid to settle down as quick as possible. even if the student is interested to go for research, after some time he lost interest because obviously rest of his friends will be drawing min 10 lakh/annum in india. but if the same student studies in US or UK he could get that stipend or tution waiver which is comparable to the salries of the job hodler’s there.

I know one professor who has done PHD in US from one of the top colleges and came to india joined in one of the varsities (next to IITs) as a professor . Now he had to quit that job after 4 yrs and joined in a company. The reason he said is that there are no students for his research for 2 yrs so he wanted to do the same research in that company.

some of the reasons might be the Lack of enthusiastic environment and unnecessary competetion (e.g 99%s for intermediate students in AndhraPradesh …English -100/100 sanskrit-100/100 funniest results !!! and 90%s in engineering ha ha ha , and would work for T**,Infy, Wi.. along with some other fake exp)

With this attitude i don’t think any university in india not even IITs as a whole could reach top 10 or 20 in future.

    What to do?
Top three companies should support some of the universities through funding to the students for research.
(Ps obviously we can’t change the mindset of each and every middle class family)

So i am not surprised with that above survey/result.

Last but not least We indians are the most intelligent (i mentioned in 1st para) and hard working ppl. So we need not prove anything but ourselves. do u have dreams ? if so meet them no matter what….

  8. I accept completely with Naresh and Kalyan. My opinion is, the college standards are getting degraded mainly due to the reservations and secondly the politics that play around in these places. At the same time our government instead of just being a silent spectator, should provide funds in developing the universities and thus maintain international standards.

Then we could think of competing with the top universitites areound the world……!!!!

In my view,IISc and all IIT’s are good environments for a thinking brain. We just have to look at the platform these universities provide to enhance our thoughts, but not the world rankings.Great people like C.V.Raman,Satish Dhavan, Abdul Kalam etc… are not produced by Harvard,Cambridge…So what we need is good platform for a thoughtful brain.

Y wud all the inventions, discoveries are done by westerners? They invent technology, they invent medicines, they invent machines…Look in every field, where is the indian contribution? Ofcourse we contributed to some extent but thats not enough to tag ourselves as most intelligent. We have theoritical knowledge but we r not good in application. I hate to say this but we copy well.

  12. 90% of the IIT professors have done their PhD from an american or British universities. They have also done their Post-Doctoral from American or British universities. The worst of all, Indian Institute of Science has started admitting the post-doctoral candidates since last year. This is pathetic to hear but it is true. If the professors have done their PhD’s from American and British universities or putting in an another way, if the professors have learned the trade of technology from the professors of american and british distinguished professors, when will the students surpass their teachers? Research needs dedication and many sacrifices. Sometimes peole dont marry and even live and forget their family. Has anyone seen newton or einstein or infact any big scientist also a good husband? Our family ties and bondings kill a scientist and has to sacrifice his research to accomodate luxuru for his family. Our very culture inhibits Research.

  13. Looks like many of you do not know that even in the US universities there is a rule that every university should admit a certain number of minorities (african-americans, mexicans, women, ect.)When ranking universities, even this is taken into consideration. So I am not sure upto what extent reservations would hamper the ranking of IIT. Our biggest drawback is research. Also in a ranking the university is considered on a whole not just the technological part of it. Unfortunately in most of our universities we seem to neglect anything that is not Engg or Medicine. Everybody in US know that if you are a techie the best school to go is MIT and if you are and arts student the best school to go is Harvard. In India the only national schools we know are IIT, IISC and AIIMS and to an extent BITS. But does anyone know the best arts university in India? I am sure the answer would be very few. This is our biggest drawback.

  14. Hi,
I did my masters from IIT. And doing my Ph.D in Nlands.
IIT students are respected every where in world.
I completely agree with the rankings given. Very few people from IITs also want to do active research. We are good in theory but fails in practicals. That is not because we cant, simple reason is lack of facilities. Lack of faculty who can do research. Every one is as capable of kalam but not every one as dedicated as him. Come on who want to do research in IITs when they are payed very less. Only 200$ per month. And do you know the salaries of IIT professors? It wont be more than 30K gross per month. Money is not every thing. But if you expect good research we need to remove the worries of research scholors which is money. And only 10% of IIT students want to do research. every one is hired by software companies. All engineering students end up in software coding. Electrical, mechanical, Civil, Aerospace, Chemical even mathematicians end up in coding. so all students who are interested in research go to foreign universities. Result you already know.

Reservations are nothing to do with present status of IITs. I would say government should rise the fundings for all universities. More IITS. Before that more faculty. To motivate active research in all fields we need more industries in country.

And I don’t agree with the saying that Indian students are better than other students. If you really want to compare, compare with students of universities of MIT, Standford you really see the difference. Well there are some exceptional cases I agree. We still need to travel a lot. But I would say with the kind of infrastructure we have and the kind of output we are giving is exceptional. Nothiing much wrong with internal administration of IITs.

  15. The system of education in India needs to be geared up. We believe in quantity but not quality. Universities are judged for the standard by the number of scholarly articles and research papers submitted by their students and their publications in prestigious international journals. If universities have astounding infrastructure and are capable of producing Nobel laureates and great scholars of international reputation, their ranking goes by leaps and bounds. No wonder some of the Universities in U.S.A and U.K have professors who are nobel laureates too. Indian universities have only one goal of churning out granduates rather than imparting high standards of education. The system of education in India has become more towards exam oriented rather than thinking, research and self development. Indian Universities never try to explore the potential of students but become just testing centers for examination and giving away degree certificates.

The western society thinks its the best and always mark their institutions well. seconly i dont think we need some one else’s ranking to prove our genius and capability. we know what we are and we need not consider these ratings seriously. but yes its imperitive to bring some changes and improvement in teh current education system. students should follow their dreams and parents must allow their children to think indpendantly not just force their dreams or wishes on their children. PARENTS MUST NOT DESTROY THE INDIVIDUALITY OF CHILDREN. THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING WHICH MUST END TO BUILD A SELF-CONFIDENT, SELF-RELIANT NATION. ONLY THEN CAN WE CHALLENGE THE WEST AND BECOME THE BEST AND TOPMOST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.

  18. Friends, every country will have its own style of education with reservations or without reservations.Reservations may be a minor problem but not the whole problem for the education system we have currently. Our policies, lack of infrastructure, corruption, insincerity and indiscipline are the major concerns. As long as we do not grow individually with better education system, we will be behind many others. It is our time now, irrespective of caste or creed or religion, let us strive for the better education system in India by questioning the illogical, corruptive and unethical governance. We have to question, question and question our government which is entirely responsible for this current education system. One good thing is for our country, now there are websites where we can share our concerns directly with the representatives of the government. Let us use the websites of the Government and spread across the country the convenience of this and for the betterment of educational system which is the necessary building stone for any a country.

  19. Hi Guys,

Let me ask one thing, If the poll as concluded that none of the Indian University is in top 200 universities, why is every top company coming to India to hire their employees? Why are they depending on 70% of the software work from the Indian professionals. I am graduated from both Indian and Australian universities i personally know how good are indian universites. Just an example if you have a any academic doudt you need to make an appointment to meet a professor before it gets clear and it might end up taking a week or never. All i see in these overseas universities just the facilities not the knowledge that you get in indian universities. Another example even for a simple calculation people(of graduate level) use calculaters. Yes i do agree that there is lot of reservations and other amenities in Indian universities. Similarly even these overseas universities have amenities for there own country mates. And let me make it clear “Some tom dick harry can’t have any right to assess the standard of Indian universities with other universities.” And also i can tell by shouting Our universites are the best.

Get all the freshmen from the Harvards, MITs, Stanfords, ox-bridge and let them give JEE and see how they fare with their peers from IITs. (Assuming nobody sues you for intellectual torture….) Also let the IIT freshers give SAT and see how they score. I am sure 95% of the IITians will be in the top 1 percentile among the “200 “Top Ranked” schools”.

Agreed IITs might lose out on infrastructure, research opportunities, diversity etc….but well pure quality of student intake is much better in IITs than anywhere else in the world. And if you just rank the undergrad programs…any respectable ranking shd see IITs in the top 10 of the world

  21. I have to agree with chinna, that not many students in Indian are not interested in research, I studied in India and then moved US but even after six years I have a hard time driving off the mentality that I have to become a doctor or an engineer. I guess it’s ingrained in us before we even start school. Here majority of student who are in medical schools are Indians. When I apply next year to med school I will be looked at as a majority than a minority during my assessment process.
However, I also have to disagree with Naresh in saying that majority of the graduate students in science (especially in biochemistry and chemistry) and math are Indians and Chinese. I guess I see your point in a way that most Indian have not invented or discovered anything maybe that’s because they are not as publicized as the westerner but there are a lot of Indian scientists that have done some amazing work. I am in University of Nebraska- Lincoln, most of the science and math faculty is mostly run by Indian professors. They have mostly the core research in biochemistry run by two Indian doctors. Most students here prefer them because they are so well versed and their teaching is quite superior compared to other faculty members here. I maybe generalizing a bit but I have to say there is some validity to you point as well on our educational process. We do memorize a lot but the college system here helps the memorizing system a lot. Most of the things we learn here is application I agree but you also have to have the memory system down before you learn to apply it. I hate to say this but the memory system in India has helped me achieve really good grades. I think if we need to improve or system of education we not only have to implement the application system but also improve our social sciences as well. I think our school system is so focused on math and science that they forget about other subjects such as arts, history, civics, history, psychology etc are important in learning as well.

PS: Most of these universities also have grade inflation which means they give their students better grades to make to university look good and also to keep their ranking as well. Most IV legue school do that and Harvard is one of them. We also have to keep in mind that most of these schools also recieve private fundings (as most rich kids go to these universities anyway) which helps do research that would be expensive as well, also they dont have to answer to the govt, like you have to do when you recieve a govt grant. As long as you follow the basic guidline of the law and human rights you can research anything you want. So they do more research that could also be another reason why they rank so well compared to the other universities.

  27. Key causes of our failure are corruption, laziness, and leg pulling. A lot junk of teachers and students as well are not dedicated towards their work. Those teachers or students who have been assimilated in the system by hooks and crooks they are spoiling our status day by day. Infrastructure is another hurdle. Most of students just want to pass examination with a high percent, for this they utilized their energy in availing all unfair means. Most of our examining bodies now become bodies’ of jokes and mockery and none of them are full proof that is why papers leaked most of time before the examination. Our policy makers, so called Rajnetas, are equally responsible for our failure because they are increasing numbers of seats every year without looking over infrastructure. Teacher to student ration is declining day by day. In this situation how we can compete with top ranking institution like Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford or Yale?

    Rajesh | Nov 15, 2007 | Reply

  28. Well the Indian universities have become more similar to a factory, like the ones during the ones in the early part of the industrial revolution, rather than being educational institutions. They seem to concentrate more on the number of graduates rather than their quality.
And the infrastructure in the universities is pathetic. For instance just have a look at the websites of the famous Indian universities (or any other Indian organization) and compare them to the western counterparts. Then look at the way the university’s help line answer most of the calls…unless or until u flash a politics or some other prestigious card you never get anything done.
These are just some small matters that wont take much time to correct but then no one gives a damn.
About the research and other academic achievements, look at the funds given to the researchers..they are worse than the money paid for people doing simple part time jobs.
So in my opinion a complete overhaul of everything has to be done in order to put our universities within the league of the western universities.

  29. Before we talk of research, campus environment etc, take a look at a very basic comparison; the way we advertize our own system. India, supposed to be hub for software etc can’t afford to have decent websites for IITs. Designing a good site shouldnt cost our country millions of rupees just a lil bit of creativity, hourly employment plans for students to maintain the site etc (Univs in US do this as part of assistantships and it’s no brainer.

I have seen few comments on industry funding. Not sure if our ‘corporations’ are interested in funding institutes, Richest man in the world, Mr.Ambani, is more inclined in building a billion dollor mansion that can house 4 Ambanis and 150 cars. If this guy is not interested in changing / influencing the system, who else can???? No wonder all our thoughts / comments are burried in gigabytes of space on servers….waiting to be heard.

  30. yes, i do agree with the rankings.we are very good at theory but lacks in practical knowledge because of less accesibility to infrastructure.
Also reservations are decreasing the quality of students at IIT. Our government must provide reservations based on merit(but not on caste).
One way to get practical knowledge is doing interns. All industries should come forward for students.

  31. No offense but i agree with the assessment. Any university to be top ranked should have a fair admission system based on performance, good administrative capability, sound research labs and atmosphere and encourage innovation rather than memorization. Indians are great at memorizing things and executing but not so great with administration and innovation. This could be due to lot of factors. Our innovation ended with Great Aryabhatta, Sushrutha etc. Even few known Indian scientists we are aware had to travel west before they could do something and be recognized back in India. We have Sunitha Williams, Kalpana Chawla etc to name few who made headlines… but my belief is they would have never made it if they stayed in India. Lets be fair, we have lot to improve on. Probably it will take another 100 years even if we start working on basics now. Again things can change so fast…. but not the values. AP CM has amassed 40,000 crores just by corruption job and is establishing Steel Industry and News paper business from scratch and Mr. Lalu yadav is our honorable Railway minister ( God save this land ). We all need 50% reservation in everything. With all these demands in place, you dont really expect to be considered great. Do you ?

    Good luck

  34. Because the quality of education is deteriorating day by day. If you take recent appointments in government educational sectors like universities or institutions, every thing based on corruption, political influence, cast based or regional feeling. So ultimately it will influence next generation education system. This fact is every body knows, but no one focusing, even media also failed to present facts. India making hard working and brilliant people and they were moving to western countries. Ultimately they were not coming back, because some of them wants to live in that culture and some people wants to come back to serve country with their skills. But they don’t get jobs in India, due to above mentioned reasons and they can get jobs easily in western countries. Day by day the technology is updating, but senior staffs still were in stage that they can’t check there mails without some body support. So they need thorough training and they have to update with changing technology. If you take small countries like Korea and Taiwan, they were good in research and they are producing more scientific papers than us. Why, first of all funding for research is less from our government and most of the projects manipulating by senior scientist or well know persons in the filed. We need younger generation and good facilities and regular training for updating technology. Our students are so good, they were hard working, we need proper guiding people with proper facilities.

You might have a perfect knowledge in mathematics, god score in SAT, GRE bla bla.. but that does not mean that you can start a new theory in mathematics. Power of innovation is completely a different thing which largely depends on environments for its nurishment.University is not a place where you memorizes teoritical things, its a place where you should cotribute universally with your works. In that regard, there is nothing worng with IITs not topping list. And it is my personal view that universities of South-east asia will start ranking up along with the economic development that has already set up here.Because research needs financial independence. So, no need to worry about the ranking of IIT and even not being a IIT-grad.

    Yes…considering education n standards of IIT, IIM…
No…. bc everything else is being pushed down..

    1. Theory … indian students r Pro’s…
    Practical…. lacking lot of things…
    2. Reservation Quota Seats…even US has some seats for
African-americans, hispanics…. but its not like
India….INdia has too many seats…. person who got
50% in 12th is in medical bc of cast!!!!
    3. Research…n Funds… compare to other biggies,
Indian education doesnt get that many funds from
state…..thats why WESTERNERS come up with new
    technology n medicines…
    4. Indian engineers n techies work in the best
    comapnies..n give their 100% to work..reason why
Outsourcing is being globalized. .. shows how
smart Indians are…but then how come it doesnt
happen at home…something to think about!1
    5. politics had killed education too….
    6. Main reason for not being in Top is our
administration which is very relaxed n laid back…
    7. Critical Thinking n innovation skills…dont really
have it…. In India..from high school to
college..its totally based on books n memorization..
. while in US or Britain or Australia…its based on
practical knowledge, thinking, innovating n much
more…which leads smarties to invent new things….
dont really have to remember all book knowledge ..!!!
    8. good professors, good students, good education..but

Being a doctor,I can say India is far behind. We have good professors but most of them know how to show their superiority or hierachy and teach 5% of their knowledge and 100% for their kids.rarely they shed their ego and help students.we have good patient turnover but no facilities to explore and progress.A student in Australia/USA/England can come back at any time and complete his studies. He is guided and supported by the prof’s but in India u can never dream of because Prof’s behaviour.Though most of our consultant got thier Phd and Masters from western world once they come to India start to behave like illetrates-pathetic behaviours.in India we still practice knife sugery but in remote hospitals of UK/AUS/USA laproscopy is performed and taught.I hope one day Indian medical system improves and patients are treated with dignity

  42. India has produced some of the best accountants in the world. Indian professional accounting bodies like the ICAI maintain very high standards. People usually talk only about IITs and IIMs, but I believe passing CA exams is no less feat than getting into an IIT or IIM. Our main problem is that we have glorified technology, management and medicine so much that we have lost sight of some very essential faculties – good examples being Law, accountancy, biotechnology and umpteen number of vacational courses like ITIs and polytechnics. Anyways most of these, especially Law and accountancy, will not be covered under any university survey as the education and training aspects are controlled by professional bodies not universities. I only want to highlight the fact that India is not only IITs and IIMs which produce just a minor proportion of Indian talent. Also survey figures are just statistics.. we shouldnt worry too much about them.

  43. hmm….what lame excuses you have been giving..
I graduated from one of India’s top notch school in chemical.
Then I came to USA for an average school for my Ph.D.
The education, is beautiful here with critical thinking and development of ideas to push science and technology further.
God, not even the top notch in India could provide that, when I studied…btw, I am a graduate in engineering and currently doing Chemical Physics…

Sorry fellas, Indian education is best for spoon feeding and vomiting on the examination papers..not for thinkers..

stop being jingoistic and look at the practicality of garbage Indian education..
    bye—

  44. also, fellow IIT ians…don’t think too much of our standards..most IIT ians cant even finish their masters properly..n jump to software…dudes, research needs patience n understanding…not earning bucks to glorify garbage…

grow up kiddos…n try publishing an article in science or nature…rather than licking your own wounds…

may be the govt of India should cut down fundings to our IITs (alma mater)and other technical schools like UDCT, to help n establish strong pure science..

remember babies..”no country can develop without fundamental research” and applied science is for lazy kids..from IITs et al,.

geez stop being cry babies…ha ha ha

  45. Hi friends,
I am a student from india doing Masters in Europ

According my knowledge corruption and reservation systems are the main drawbacks in our education system from K.G level to P&G. level

When ever we avoid these two things in our country, we can try for good results.

Govt should provide good infrastructure to the institutions and funding to the students who are talented.

mainly politics should not have any interaction with educational institutions, this is one of the main reason showing effect on higher standard of education.

The total Post graduation and technical education levels in India should be controlled by central govt level.

  46. Guys,

I think, our education system is outdated and it will keep getting …unless a crazy politician like Arjun Singh ( I am not saying Arjun Singh him self) would take a stance against goverment and put efforts to improve the system.

    OR

All universities should be individually ranked by an independent organization each year with the quality of education and upto date syllabus at center criteria. At least this would show them where they are standing and would create a competitive environment amongst the universities.

  47. Ofcourse, Its annoying to see that Indian universities are not ranking among top 200. Assuming that we are lacking practical knowledge, though we are good at theory.
Indian students are worlds best students in Mathematics, and Computer sciences.
