World Bank uncovers serious fraud in India health projects (Discussions)

The World Bank has said it has uncovered “serious incidents of fraud and corruption” in a review of five health projects it has backed in India.

The World Bank said on Friday it had uncovered “serious incidents” of fraud and corruption in a review of five health projects in India. Evidence of problems was found in a just-released Detailed Implementation Review launched by the World Bank in 2006, with the support of the Indian government. It looked at the five World Bank-supported projects, some dating back to 1997, for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. “The probe has revealed unacceptable indicators of fraud and corruption,” World Bank said in a statement.

Corruption is not a new thing in INDIA discussing about it is not going to solve the problem???

  2. 2 Sanjeev Jan 12th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

I agree that corruption is not a new thing in India and among Indians, but the point here is that the World bank is also aware of it. This would definately hinder any future endeavours on any such projects which required financial support from the World Bank.

If there is anyone who can bring change to India..thats you..
Do not give or take corruption at any cost..however small it may be..may be others go faster than you..but sooner or later the true winner will be you..and many others follow your path..

    And always be environment conscious..

We are not talking about whether corruption is new in India .. As Sanjeev mentioned the discussion point here is how the world bank report impacts the future grants ..
The report surely affect the future funding if government does not provide the proper measures on how the funds are being utilized .. It is sad to know that the corruption is occurring in health projects ..
Lets do our bit by not accepting and not giving any bribes .. I hope one day India will become a country with no or little corruption ..

Good. I expected this to happen sooner. It’s a start to the end of these things in India I feel.

Why should India get grants in the first place? With all the grants in place from the past what was done, other than make the rich richer. Corruption is not just a part of politicians it starts from the common man too.

Say you have to stand in line to get a license to drive a vehicle, the line takes a whole day long if someone offers to sell their earlier spot for 5 rupees everyone behind would jump to get that. Even though this is corruption in disguise convenience makes it alright.

No matter how many grants India gets there is not going to be much done because everyone is greedy. There is not many who are selfless to the advancement of the country. We can all talk about this but its not going to change. Its a little too late, me thinks.

WORLD BANK -IMF - BIG FRAUDS-

World bank and IMF give money to third world countries not because they think the Govt in these nations is good and would bring abt change and development.

They know that its a cycle- they give money to corrupt leaders of africa and asia-
Then these leader indulge in corruption. And deposit their money back in Banks of Europe/UK/USA- so this way the money in back in hands of capitalist.

Yes now there is some development -but that would have come without change if we did not have corrupt leaders.

then again it come to recollecting money - its a loan - so good interest - if not return in money - they ask the Govt in Third world - to tax and inflate prices and fine people(ex:challans) unnecessarily. And today there are many south american countries whose forces and doctors are in iraq becoz they had to send their forces becoz neither govt strong nor they can return loans.

And super powers even try to suggest(dictate) policies to loaned countries

Well given the track record of india in corruption WB should have put in place an effective monitoring mechanism before granting funds.WB had failed in that aspect.

this should be taken serious. media should prepare case for this and ask court to take serious action against corrpt leader.

Given a chance every Indian would speak volumes about it..Criticize about it…Debate it on it 24*7*365 times ..we blame the politicians, corrupt officers, govt…its an easy deal..but what are we doing to STOP….No one needs pages of comments , abuse, and sarcasm…

CHANGE is what India needs? Start with your self and then bring change in others…Its not about Saying Everything…but start to DO SOMETHING that can bring in change….

Little amount of chlorine cleans water from germs…and what is needed now is something like this?

World bank is for our aid and people misusing have brought a bad name and led down our country….

I would favor in world bank to stop funds till we have a proper system of utilization in place shown.India is country of intelligence…i am sure intellectuals will come up with a solution to stop such things…
