Devil’s Advocate: Sunita Narain on Nano (Misc.)
By Novell on Jan 21, 2008 in Discussions, Miscellaneous Videos
Is the Nano a miracle of modern manufacturing, which makes cheap cars available to millions, or is it in the Indian situation a potential nightmare that could create unacceptable pollution and urban congestion. That’s the key issue that will be discussed with Director of the Centre for Science and Environment and a lady that many consider the conscience keeper of India, Sunita Narain.

So what is your take guys? Is the Nano a Miracle or A Potential Nightmare? We want to get your answers and also a reason why do you think so?

Its a miracle .. because it is going to replace a lot of scooters, motorcycles and auto-rikshaws which in turn will reduce the pollution

Even though the Nano occupies more space on roads and leads for congestion and hence pollution , if the traffic rules are made efficient(as in US), then the Nano would definitely be a Miracle rather than a nightmare.
Who would not wish to have a nice ride listening to their favoutite songs in their own car and with their beloved ones beside them enjoying the ride?
So Kudos to Nano….

to hell with anyone raising concerns of pollution and traffic infrastructure. these intellectual guys drive a car themselves and when its time their not-so-rich fellow citizen is being given a car that he can afford, all these concerns come to light.
TATA will produce around twohundred thousand cars a year and thats around one-fifth of the total cars sold in India. that implies if even every car was sold it doesnt make a big difference in the no. of new cars getting out on the roads. and being who he is TATA would never produce a car which is unsafe or a threat to the environment.
by any reason one can think of nano is surely a gift to common people everywhere.

Nano and similar segment cars have now become a spearhead of advanced manufacturing in India and though a little late, we have been able to achieve the mile stone. The question lies in whether it should be considered a boon or curse. Its a boon in the view of people who would now have the same privilege as of the upper class …and curse for environmentalists, government..
WHY?
Increase in pollution, Traffic Congestion, City life, Corporate style…anything and everything would make our roads hell with existing and new things…
BUT..
Nano and similar segment cars in itself would be a great value added addition to us. All classes would be able to enjoy the life of a luxury travel.
HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN IN THIS ENVIRONMENT?
Technology has chnaged so much that use of fuel cell, hydrid engines..can reduce pollution and new methods of traffic control can reduce congestion…..The Question for all of us is..
ARE WE READY FOR THIS???
Find an answer for this and u have answer for all u r ?

Pros:
many people can buy it, use it, replace some scooters and bikes..yada, yada
Cons:
No airbag! defence statement: Indian rules are not as strict as European/US rules. It is supposed to be a family car-what is the value of human life in Inida? When we introduce new technology/product cutting corners on safety issues and defending it is the worst part. Common man can ride small cars without airbags-and forget to wear seat belts – isn’t it better than riding a bike!

While the rest of the world is thinking about putting an end to the use of fossil fuels or minimize its use by looking for alternative fuels such as hydrogen, fuels-cells, hybrid, electric, so on; our industrial giants have decided to unveil a new car in to the market which is of less safety standards. But I still appreciate their effort to bring something to a common man which is considered to be as a luxury till now.
But I think its not just a cost that matters to everyone..imagine driving the Nano on Indian roads covered with dips, pot holes, drenches,…is it gonna survive? I cant imagine whats the situation of the car gonna be if a scooter hits it? Repair and maintenance costs will be high.
But one positive thing about this is that you can put an end to highly polluting autos and taxis who uses kerosene mixed fuel. And improving jobs in manufaturing sector which is good
Also I am hoping that, the profits which the company is
going to obtain from this will be used in developing a highly efficient vehicle and be the first in the whole world to invent one of its kind.

What Sunita Narain said was absolutely right in every sense. I agree.

I think the Government should encourage the Nano and impose more taxes for Bigger car manufacturers and users. All the bigger cars comming into Indian market these days occupy more space than Nano, more pollutant in the sence that they are less fuel efficient and are sold for higher prices than in the developed countries..
If just every one uses Nano it would be lot better…

I think soon , all cities have road grid (with cars stagnant hardly moving)and we should invent cars where we can live just like house/home, with all entertainment stuff and bedding. people should think about population.

Tata is one of the person who is leading India in its development making evrybodies dream come true. . Thanks to TATA. If Indian people think to obey the trafic rule n regulation they can enjoy the NANO car.

Kudos to Tata’s for making this happen at cheap price. Unfortunately it definitely adds more congestion to already congested roads.
Road/Highway worthiness of this vehicle is zero. This is just an extension of existing Auto Rickshaw with one extra wheel and 4 doors. Steering handle is replaced with Steering wheel.
From technical point of view, this car cannot take any impact. In my view it could be worse than Maruti (where we have joke, if cycle hits maruti or maruti hits cycle, it is maruti which is going to get damaged). This vehicle will get shattered into pieces with little bit of impact.
After all it is sold for Rs 1 Lakh. We can’t expect more than this.
It is people choice to choose the death/comfort machine

Can somebody please tell her to go fly a kite? I bet she would be travelling in some car and how can a person who drives a bigger car can talk about this issue? If any one has the right to complain, those are the people who dont own a car.

Purchasing a vehicle is not only the question of personal investment, but also involves the investment on the infrastructure. The later part, we comfortably delegated to the government as was the belief of all of us tha government is responsible for investments on roads and bridges..
It does not take a blink of eye to realise with the current state of chaos in any city in India that Central and State Government has failed miserably on their part for provding proper infrastructure..
So the question to everyone of us is, does it end if one owns a car (no matter it is one lakh, 10 lakhs or whatsoever),perhaps not. So the solution to this problem is to have on every city a spiral of roads given to intrested parties and have them operate on BOT mechanism. If anybody wants to drive a car he can do so
in those and reach the destination and leave the rest of the infrasturecture for public transport vehicles….
Now with that statement everybody will say the critics will voice their opinion when the common man has something to cheer up… but the important fact is
the amoutn of square area that a common man leaves on the road as his foot print while he is on the road is increasing so he should pay for that proportionate increase which my friends you all know that is not being covered in 1 lakh….
