The New England Journal of Medicine study found smoking already accounts for 900,000 deaths a year in India. The study warns that without action, the death toll from smoking will climb still further.
Nearly One million people a year will die from tobacco smoking in India - Research predicts.
It predicts smoking could soon account for 20% of all male deaths and 5% of all female deaths between the ages of 30 and 69. The researchers have calculated that on average, men who smoke bidi - small hand-rolled cigarettes common in India - lose about six years of life. Men who smoke full-size cigarettes shorten their lives by about ten years. And for women bidi smokers the figure is about eight years.
The figures are based on a survey of deaths among a sample of 1.1 million homes in all parts of India carried out by about 900 field workers

If govt taxes these smokers more(100%)and makes some money it will help twice interms of funding social programs and lesser population. Can you imagine India has a billion people and 3% of world wealth (my apologies about being rude what but really what good are these people to anybody and i am one of them too0). So this way it will help….. a lot…and also as one wise man said we all die in the long term.

Many Indians working in MNC’s are smokers.. how can you come to this conclusion. My team leader is a smoker..but he’s the backbone for our team..and I respect him for his professionalism…
India has a billion population.. thats not the mistake of the people.. its the responsibility of our politicians to make aware of the growing population especially to the uneducated people….. raise strict rules (restricting to 2 per family..)
Our politicians are always worried about the oppositions.. blaming them, criticizing them… and the media always worried about the hot gossips in bollywood… every department has loopholes..education, politics, sports, career..
Prevention is always better than cure… campaigns should be introduces, channels should air more and more ads on effects of smoking.. should make them realize their loved ones are depending on them.. they should live atleast for the sake of their family…
And imposing more tax on cigarettes? Do you really think our country is a poor country? When you get a chance try to know more about our fukin politicians.. how luxurious life they live.. where do they get all this money from? Its all our money dude…
In short no one DARES to question our system..

. In the same way if you increase the price of petrol to its natural level in inda you will save the govt and people a lot of money and also decrease congestion and pollution, it can be thought of as i am placing a burden on a middle class man, instead they become more effecient……when they commute(may be bicycle for short distance etc etc…). Nature is funny when it forces we either adapt/persist become better or die.
I am sorry if you are hurt, the idea was not to hurt. Its not about team leaders and hard working people, i am sure every body is very smart and competant. Its about population and monetary rewards. If somebody wants to smoke let them smoke but raising the tax would be the best way to discourage them. If you price a pack to 50-100rs more it will be hauting them a little bit whenever they smoke hopefully
