98 corrupt cops caught on tape, suspended (Misc.)

At least 98 policemen in Delhi have been suspended after being caught on camera demanding and accepting bribes from Blueline bus drivers and operators.

The sting operation was conducted by Chetan, a Delhi citizen, who said he was determined to do something about Delhi’s worst-kept secret that its Blueline crisis is partly the fault of the men who’re supposed to keep the city safe.

It took Chetan three months to capture the Delhi police at its worst. The ignorance of the policemen sometimes resulted in tragedies. In January 2008, Chetan submitted his footage to the high court, which ordered the police to review it, identify the guilty men and punish them.

”Ninety-eight personnels are suspended and enquiry against nine other inspectors is going on,” said Rajan Bhagat, spokesperson, Delhi Police.

What’s fascinating about this news is that the entire sting operation is conducted by an ordinary concerned citizen. The investigation was completed in less than 3 months resulting in a huge number of police personnel being suspended. Please share your thoughts ..

Finally a good news from India… we all know that corruption is rampant in india… but this guy was not sitting around. He took the pains to record the corruption.

This should have been the job of govt vigilance agency.. but hey they are part of this system too.

If there is a medal or something for these kind of things…. Chetan should get one from the highest authority. We need more Chetans and quick enquiries like these.

Thanks for taking up this task. A new generation of investigation (just like in the USA). If the courts can’t take any action, submit it to the Media (TVs). Atleast they would bring shame to these people.

    Thanks once again.

This is the most pathetic blog ever! I think it is absolutely pathetic how not one of the people who have commented above have actually talked about how awful the news is, instead they are hailing the reporter calling him “A true citizen of our country”… Granted it was very brave and courageous of Mr. Chetan to risk his life for the news but I guess what I am trying to get at is too much importance has been given to how great he is and not one person seems to care about the actual news…
98 POLICE OFFICERS have been caught not some petty number like 2 or 3!! Not to mention all the Blueline bus people who have given in… AND THIS IS ONLY DELHI!!! Absolutely ridiculous that the system has failed for so many and we are still so reluctant to change it…
Go on praise Mr. Chetan for loving his country so much, I am sure he will be the one to make us a world power or whatever else you dream of while people in our country starve on the streets…

  17. 17 Silly Apr 7th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

    message for the person above..

Are you nutz….. People should be applauded for the brave acts they do. He atleast got some good for our country, it’s a good start ..what are u doing.. just cribbing abt the poverty in india..are u actually doing anything…..Kudos to u chetan. keep up the good work .

Elected leaders have the powers to crush such rampant corruption. question is are we to blame for electing these people ? Bloggers have u ever used your vote.

We elect corrupt politicians for every succesive governments and hence the result of corrupt govt. officials.

Can give chetan a handshake nothing much. Corruption exists untill we take our vote seriously.

There is a larger picture than it looks. Few of us in metro’s cann’t bring a any change to the country. For sure this will be among us for other 50years……..lets hope that atleast gets slightly better after those years.

  20. 20 Hari Apr 7th, 2008 at 5:33 pm

That’s good…..but we need more people like you [I can’t try because I am not in India]. I hope I will see a corruptionless India in near future….gooood work ! really hats-off

  21. 21 Soni Apr 7th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Hmm interesting. 98 are caught, how many remaining?

  22. 22 Chhota Chetan Apr 7th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

Great job Chetan… Hats Off to you !!! We all are really proud of you. To do this you need guds, determination and your will to do something for the country and you have done a wonderful job. But now the next target shud be the politicians and this cleansing system shud be done from the top.

  23. 23 Nag.. Apr 7th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

    great job….
Atleast this type of news should be applauded and hyped, so that more such people come forward in taking such responsibility in future..

  24. 24 VENKATESH Apr 12th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

I really appreciate the person who made this out.. He should be awarded by the govt. to fight against the corruption. I think this is just a beginning to fight against corruption, and not an end.. People should realize and fight agaisnt such offences. Its all our responsibility, and not a single person effort. I wish to salute this guy who made this out in public putting his life on threatened.
One more thing I always know that whenever something like this happen, the lower cadre people become the scape goat like constables, Head constables, and sometimes subordinate police officers of rank of ASI and SI of polce becomes the prey. Dont we think the higherups like officers of rank above inspector are not aware of this fact and are not instrumental in using these men for collecting bribes. They should be punished first and not just focus on lower constable group. The higherups who sit in Ac rooms and make use of lower rank police men for their money collections should be punished. I feel the way the corrupt officer and his administration, in the same way the lower cadre policemen would follow. This is just once incidence, but there are so many corruptions and bribes taking place by higher police officers, R and D Engineers, and many Govt officers.
Lets gat awakened to combat a fight against corruption.

Once again Great job to this non-uniform soldier to fight against Indian evil deeds.
