England couldn’t have had a more disastrous start to their India tour as the visitors went down by 158 runs in the first ODI at Rajkot on Friday. Chasing 388, England were bowled out for 229 in only 37.4 overs. Kevin Pietersen waged a lone battle with a fighting 63. Yuvraj Singh roared back to form by slamming a whirlwind unbeaten 138 as India pulverised England to pile up a record 387 for five in the first one-dayer here on Friday.

India became the fourth nation to have its flag flying on the Moon’s surface when Chandrayaan-1’s Moon Impact Probe device - which has the Indian Tricolour painted on it - touched down.
The 35-kilo payload crash-landed on the lunar surface at around 2030 hrs IST. The MIP has started sending its first signals to the satellite. It also contains equipment which will help scientists design a lunar lander or rover for the upcoming Chandrayaan-2 mission.
There’s a lot tucked away inside the MIP. There’s a device to constantly check its height as it falls, another to check what the air on the moon is made of and even a video camera to photograph the moon from close range. Those photographs will help ISRO decide where to land India’s first moon rover, a few years from now. The MIP also has the Indian flag painted on its sides a Sanskrit shloka as well.
The MIP disconnected from Chandrayaan at 100 km from the moon. As it fell, it kept sending information back to the satellite. Closer to the surface, rockets were fired to slow down its speed and soften impact. After 30 min of free fall, the MIP crash-landed on the south pole of moon.
The MIP is the brainchild of former president APJ Abdul Kalam. He said it’s his dream to see an Indian astronaut walk the moon. The landing of the MIP comes 50 years after the first man-made object landed on the lunar surface. The other countries that landed probes on the moon are the former USSR, the US and China.

Four people were seriously injured as two rival groups of students clashed in Chennai on Wednesday evening. A group of students wielding iron rods and sticks entered the campus of Ambedkar Law College in the city, and beat up some students coming out after taking their examination.The students were brutally beaten up by the group inside the college campus. “The clash apparently occurred after groups of students disagreed over the contents of invitation cards printed for a political event. Police pickets have been posted at the site to prevent further clashes. The situation is under control,” a police official said.

Refuting allegations of being mute spectators to the incident, police said that they did not have permission to enter the college premises. The police did not try dispersing the crowd despite one of the students being mercilessly beaten at the college gate. It was only after some journalists objected that the police helped move the injured students. Four students have been severely injured and the condition of two of these is said to be critical.
Tamil Nadu Government has initiated disciplinary action against six Chennai police officials for standing by and watching as two groups of students clashed with each other on Wednesday evening at a college in the city. An Assistant police commissioner and an inspector have been suspended while four sub inspectors have been transferred. The principal of the college, too, has been suspended as he failed to take appropriate action to stop clashes between students.
